NEW YORK — Alexandra Eala’s impressive 2026 US Open campaign has come to an end after the Filipino tennis star was edged by close friend and American No. 14 seed Iva Jovic in a dramatic three-set battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Jovic prevailed 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 after three hours and three minutes, denying Eala a place in the US Open fourth round and a blockbuster meeting with American superstar Coco Gauff.
The defeat was particularly painful because Eala had fought her way back after losing the opening set, only for Jovic to regain control and close out the deciding set.
Eala fights back but Jovic has the final word
Eala initially found herself in trouble, falling behind early in the opening set before mounting a comeback.
The 21-year-old Filipina eventually took the first set 7-5, putting herself within two sets of reaching the second week of the US Open for the first time.
Jovic, however, responded strongly.
The American captured the second set 6-3, setting up a tense deciding set in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The final set became a battle of momentum, with both players producing stretches of high-level tennis. Jovic ultimately held her nerve to win 6-4 and complete the comeback.
From friends to fierce rivals
The matchup carried an emotional storyline long before the first ball was struck.
Eala and Jovic have developed a close friendship since first meeting in 2022. They have also played doubles together, including at events earlier this season.
The official US Open described their relationship as a “sisterhood,” while both players acknowledged the unusual challenge of facing someone they consider a close friend.
But once they stepped onto the court, friendship had to take a back seat.
Jovic entered the match already holding a 2-0 career advantage over Eala, having defeated her earlier this year at Queen’s Club and Roland Garros. Eala had been searching for her first victory against the American.
She came close in New York—but Jovic ultimately extended the head-to-head advantage to 3-0.
Eala leaves New York after another breakthrough
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Eala’s US Open campaign represents another major step forward in what has been a remarkable 2026 season.
She entered New York as the No. 17 seed, her highest Grand Slam seeding to date, and arrived after winning her first WTA singles title in Washington, D.C.
That victory was historic: Eala became the first Filipino woman to win a WTA singles title and subsequently broke into the world’s Top 20.
At the US Open, she backed that achievement up with dominant performances.
Eala opened her campaign by defeating American Mary Stoiana 6-1, 6-2, before beating Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.
Her run also generated huge support from Filipino fans in New York, with Philippine flags and passionate supporters filling the stands during her matches. Reuters noted the strong atmosphere surrounding Eala’s run and the growing following she has developed internationally.
And then there was Coco Gauff
The stakes surrounding Eala-Jovic became even bigger because the winner was guaranteed a fourth-round showdown with Coco Gauff.
Gauff, the No. 4 seed and 2023 US Open champion, had already secured her place in the fourth round by defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 6-4.
Gauff’s victory marked her fifth consecutive US Open appearance in the fourth round or better.
Instead of an Eala-Gauff rematch, however, tennis fans will now get Gauff vs. Jovic.
Gauff previously defeated Jovic in a three-set match in Rome earlier this year, meaning their upcoming meeting will add another chapter to an increasingly interesting rivalry between two of America’s brightest young stars.
Eala’s story is far from over
Eala may have fallen short of the US Open fourth round, but her 2026 season continues to underline her emergence as one of women’s tennis’ most exciting young players.
Her Washington title, Wimbledon fourth-round appearance and US Open run have established her as a legitimate contender on the global stage—not merely a promising prospect.
And while her New York journey ended against a friend, the bigger picture is clear: Eala is now firmly among the players the world’s best can no longer afford to overlook.
