SINGAPORE — What initially appeared to be another person sleeping in a quiet Jalan Besar alley turned into a shocking discovery for a cleaner when he realised a 51-year-old man lying motionless had stopped breathing.
The man was found near 36 Upper Weld Road on Monday afternoon, September 7.
Police were alerted at around 4.25pm after a cleaner discovered the man motionless and found that he was no longer breathing, according to a report by Shin Min Daily News.
Cleaner Initially Thought the Man Was Just Sleeping
A male cleaner, who declined to be identified, said he had seen the same man lying on a metal box in the alley the previous afternoon.
At the time, the man was still breathing.
The cleaner said he assumed the man might have been drunk.
Having worked in the area for nearly four years, the cleaner said he was used to seeing intoxicated people sleeping in the alley.
But when he came across the 51-year-old man again on Monday, something was different.
The man was motionless.
And this time, he was no longer breathing.
Alley Cordoned Off as Police Arrive
The alley was subsequently cordoned off as police officers responded to the scene.
A 70-year-old man identified only as Lu told Shin Min Daily News that he saw police vehicles arriving while cycling past the area.
By around 5pm, at least two police cars were at the scene.
A blue tent was also seen covering the body as several members of the public gathered nearby.
Man Pronounced Dead at the Scene
Police confirmed that the man was found motionless on a bench near Upper Weld Road.
An SCDF paramedic pronounced him dead at the scene.
Based on preliminary investigations, police said they do not suspect foul play.
Investigations are ongoing.
