Marco Bezzecchi Became the First Rider Ever Under 1:45 at Aragon — But Marc Marquez Is Starting Right Beside Him

ARAGON, Spain — Marco Bezzecchi did more than take pole position at MotorLand Aragon. He broke through a barrier no MotoGP rider had ever crossed at the Spanish circuit — and did it while staring down two of the most dangerous riders on the grid.

The Aprilia Racing rider produced a sensational 1 minute, 44.962 seconds in qualifying Saturday, becoming the first MotoGP rider to lap MotorLand Aragon in under 1:45 and securing pole for the 2026 Aragon Grand Prix. His performance denied reigning world champion Marc Marquez a third consecutive Aragon pole, while Alex Marquez completed an explosive all-Marquez-and-Bezzecchi front row.

Bezzecchi had already signaled on Friday that something special was coming. He topped practice with a then-record 1:45.455, beating Alex and Marc Marquez in what MotoGP described as the closest Friday top three in premier-class history, with only 0.038 seconds separating the trio.

Less than 24 hours later, Bezzecchi found nearly another half-second.

During qualifying, the Italian first lowered the benchmark to 1:44.984 before improving again to 1:44.962. Marc Marquez launched a final attack but suffered a dramatic moment under braking and could not overhaul the Aprilia.

Bezzecchi Stops Marquez on His Own Playground

That matters because MotorLand Aragon has historically been one of Marc Marquez’s strongest circuits.

Marquez has won seven MotoGP races at Aragon, making him the obvious pre-weekend favorite. He was also chasing a third straight pole at the venue before Bezzecchi rewrote the track record.

Yet Marquez openly acknowledged after qualifying that Bezzecchi currently appeared to possess stronger race pace.

That admission could be even more important than the qualifying result.

Pole position gives Bezzecchi the best possible launch point, but both Marc and Alex Marquez have shown enough long-run speed to turn Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix into a much more complicated fight than the qualifying sheet suggests.

And Bezzecchi knows it.

Rather than treating the record-breaking pole as mission accomplished, the Italian said the serious work was only beginning, pointing specifically to the pace of both Marquez brothers.

Aprilia Suddenly Has Three Bikes Near the Front

The bigger story may not be Bezzecchi alone.

Trackhouse Aprilia rider Raul Fernandez qualified fourth, while championship leader and factory Aprilia star Jorge Martin secured fifth place. KTM’s Pedro Acosta completes the second row in sixth.

That means three Aprilias will start inside the first five positions — a significant tactical advantage as Ducati attempts to respond with Marc Marquez, Alex Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia.

Bagnaia will start eighth after having to recover from a more difficult Friday, with VR46 Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio seventh.

One of Saturday’s other notable performances came from Johann Zarco, who qualified ninth on his return after a lengthy absence caused by a knee injury sustained in May.

The Championship Makes This Pole Even Bigger

Bezzecchi’s qualifying breakthrough arrives at a crucial stage of the 2026 MotoGP championship.

Before the Aragon weekend, Jorge Martin led the standings with 240 points, while teammate Bezzecchi sat second with 209 — a 31-point deficit. Marc Marquez entered Aragon fourth on 200 points, meaning the title fight remains highly compressed heading into the second half of the campaign.

Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura, third in the championship with 203 points entering the weekend, is not competing at Aragon after suffering a fracture near his left thumb during training in Japan.

That absence potentially opens another opportunity for Bezzecchi and Marquez to gain ground.

But qualifying awards no championship points.

Bezzecchi still has to convert the fastest lap ever recorded at MotorLand into results when the lights go out — first in the Sprint and then in Sunday’s full Grand Prix.

And with Marc Marquez starting immediately alongside him at a circuit where the Spaniard has built one of MotoGP’s most formidable records, the fastest man over one lap may not necessarily be the man celebrating at the end.

Bezzecchi has already broken Aragon’s stopwatch. Now he has to survive the Marquez brothers.
