Hyun Bin Is Back — But This Time, the Stakes Are Much Higher
Hyun Bin is returning as Baek Ki-tae in “Made in Korea 2,” and the Disney+ political crime thriller is setting up an even darker battle involving power, revenge, ambition and family.
At a press conference in Seoul on Sept. 2, Hyun Bin acknowledged the pressure of returning after the success of the first season, saying he expects viewers who enjoyed Season 1 to come back for the new chapter.
The biggest change? The story jumps forward nine years.
Baek Ki-tae has risen even higher within the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA), accumulating wealth and influence while becoming increasingly ambitious. But his past is about to catch up with him.
Waiting in the shadows is prosecutor Jang Geon-young, played by Jung Woo-sung.
And this time, Geon-young isn’t simply seeking justice.
He’s seeking revenge.
Jung Woo-sung’s Character Takes a Dark Turn
Jang Geon-young’s transformation is one of the major storylines in Season 2.
After losing everything in the first season, Geon-young returns nine years later determined to bring Ki-tae down. Jung Woo-sung described the character as someone whose pursuit of public justice has gradually become intertwined with personal vengeance.
That creates a dangerous question at the heart of the new season:
Can someone convince himself that revenge is still justice?
Director Woo Min-ho has described the difference between the two seasons in striking terms, saying Season 1 felt like a fight between children, while Season 2 is more like a battle between adults.
Woo Do-hwan Becomes a Bigger Player
Woo Do-hwan also returns as Baek Ki-hyun, Ki-tae’s younger brother.
But Ki-hyun is no longer the uncertain young man audiences saw in Season 1.
Nine years have changed him. He has developed his own principles and ambitions, placing him directly in the increasingly complicated conflict surrounding his brother.
That means the central conflict is no longer simply Ki-tae versus Geon-young.
It is becoming a three-way struggle involving power, loyalty and family.
Season 2 Moves Into Korea’s Political Turmoil of 1979
The new season remains rooted in the turbulent political atmosphere of 1970s South Korea.
The story moves toward the events surrounding the assassination of President Park Chung-hee and the political vacuum that followed, leading into the military takeover of Dec. 12, 1979.
However, “Made in Korea” uses fictional central characters rather than portraying the real historical figures directly. The creators are using the historical period as the backdrop for a fictional power struggle involving the KCIA and competing factions.
That distinction is important because the series is a political thriller inspired by its historical setting, rather than a straightforward historical reenactment.
Six Episodes, One Continuous Story
Season 2 will consist of six episodes, with the storytelling structure changing from the first season.
Rather than presenting separate episode-driven stories, Season 2 follows one continuous narrative across all six episodes.
The returning cast includes:
- Hyun Bin as Baek Ki-tae
- Jung Woo-sung as Jang Geon-young
- Woo Do-hwan as Baek Ki-hyun
- Seo Eun-soo
- Won Ji-an
- Jung Sung-il
- Roh Jae-won
- Cha Hee
Director Woo Min-ho and screenwriter Park Eun-kyo also return from the first season.
When Does ‘Made in Korea 2’ Premiere?
“Made in Korea 2” premieres on Disney+ on Sept. 9, 2026, with two episodes released initially, followed by two new episodes each Wednesday. The season concludes with its six episodes across three weeks.
Important accuracy note: AsiaOne’s Sept. 3 report lists Sept. 6 as the premiere date, but Disney+’s current listing and multiple Korean and international entertainment reports confirm Sept. 9. The Sept. 6 date therefore appears to be an error in the AsiaOne article.
In the United States, the series is available through Hulu, while international viewers can watch it on Disney+.
Why K-Drama Fans Are Watching
The appeal of Season 2 isn’t simply the return of three major Korean stars.
It’s the evolution of their characters.
Ki-tae has more power — and apparently an even greater appetite for it.
Geon-young has lost almost everything and may no longer be able to separate justice from revenge.
Ki-hyun has grown into a man with ambitions of his own.
Put those three characters inside one of the most politically volatile periods in modern Korean history, and “Made in Korea 2” has the ingredients for a much more intense power struggle than its predecessor.
The first season was reportedly Disney+’s most-watched Korean original of 2025, adding even more pressure to the highly anticipated return.
