NEW YORK — Alex Eala’s historic US Open campaign has taken another dramatic turn.
After powering into the third round for the first time in her career, the 21-year-old Filipina will now face a familiar—and particularly difficult—opponent: American rising star Iva Jovic.
Jovic booked the highly anticipated showdown by defeating Britain’s Francesca Jones, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round. That means Eala and Jovic will meet again, but this time with a place in the US Open Round of 16 on the line.
The matchup carries an intriguing twist: Eala and Jovic are close friends away from the court.
But once they step onto the court, friendship will have to take a back seat.
Eala enters the clash with momentum
Eala earned her spot in the third round with an impressive 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The victory lasted just 64 minutes, with Eala controlling the opening set before remaining composed when Oliynykova mounted a stronger challenge in the second.
The performance was particularly significant because Oliynykova had previously defeated Eala in Strasbourg earlier this year.
This time, Eala produced a much more controlled performance.
WTA statistics showed that Eala hit 19 winners against 17 unforced errors, broke serve five times and won 11 of 14 points when she came forward to the net.
Eala later credited patience and consistency of focus as the keys to getting through the match.
“I was pleased with my patience and my consistency of focus. I think that was the key to winning the match today.”
Her victory also followed a straight-sets first-round win over American qualifier Mary Stoiana, 6-1, 6-2.
But Jovic presents a much tougher test
Jovic, the tournament’s No. 14 seed, enters the matchup with a significant advantage in their previous senior-level meetings.
The American has defeated Eala twice this season, winning 6-4, 6-2 at the French Open and 6-2, 6-2 at the HSBC Championships in London. Jovic has yet to drop a set against Eala in their two official senior singles meetings.
That makes the US Open encounter more than just another third-round match.
For Eala, it is a chance to rewrite the story.
For Jovic, it is an opportunity to continue a winning streak against one of the fastest-rising players in women’s tennis.
Friends, rivals and now Grand Slam opponents
Their relationship adds another layer to an already compelling matchup.
The two recently appeared together during the US Open’s Stars of the Open exhibition event during Fan Week, where Jovic also got the better of Eala. The WTA reported that Jovic won the exhibition set, while GMA News noted that the two have developed a close friendship off the court.
Jovic welcomed the opportunity to face Eala deeper in the tournament.
“Yeah, I’m super excited. The atmosphere is gonna be amazing, and she’s been playing some great tennis.”
She added that it was nice for the two friends to meet in the third round of a Grand Slam and hoped they could both continue making deep runs.
Eala, meanwhile, had already acknowledged that both Jovic and Jones were friends before knowing who she would face.
“Who I play in the next round is definitely out of my control.”
That mindset reflects the approach that has helped Eala navigate the tournament so far: focus on the next point rather than the surrounding hype.
Eala is making history in New York
This year’s US Open is already a major milestone for Eala.
She entered the tournament as the No. 17 seed, making her the highest-seeded Filipina in Grand Slam tennis history, according to Olympics coverage.
Her third-round appearance also marks a significant improvement over her US Open debut last year.
In 2025, Eala defeated Denmark’s Carla Tauson in the opening round before losing to Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in the second round.
She also arrives in New York as the reigning WTA 500 DC Open champion, having captured her second career singles title in Washington earlier this month.
Reuters noted that Eala has continued building momentum after her breakthrough 2026 season, including a strong Wimbledon run and her rise into the world’s top 20.
A place in the Round of 16 awaits
The stakes are now considerably higher.
Eala has already secured the deepest US Open run of her career. But beating Jovic would take her into the Round of 16, giving the Philippines another historic moment on one of tennis’ biggest stages.
The official US Open schedule lists third-round women’s singles matches across Friday and Saturday sessions, with the precise order of play subject to tournament scheduling.
One thing is certain: this will not be an ordinary matchup.
Two young players who know each other’s games—and each other personally—will meet with a Grand Slam breakthrough within reach.
