A 29-year-old worker was arrested in Cebu City after allegedly taking his employer’s multicab without permission, with a carnapping complaint filed against him after the vehicle was later recovered.
The man, identified only as Rene from Sitio Royal in Barangay Cogon Pardo, was reportedly arrested at the Carbon Police Station and turned over to personnel of the Inayawan Police Station together with his employer. The incident happened on Sept. 23, 2026, in the Poblacion Pardo area.
According to investigators, Rene used the multicab without informing his employer, who was asleep at the time. The employer later reported the vehicle’s unauthorized use to authorities.
Rene reportedly admitted that he had been heavily intoxicated when he took the vehicle. He said he had lost money through an online gambling game known as “scatter” and was confused about what to do afterward.
He denied, however, that he intended to pawn or sell the multicab. He said he only wanted to drive around while sobering up and could no longer remember where he had gone.
The multicab was eventually returned to its owner, but the incident still resulted in a complaint under Republic Act No. 10883, or the New Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016.
The case highlights how taking another person’s vehicle without authorization can result in criminal charges even when the vehicle is eventually recovered. The circumstances surrounding Rene’s actions and the allegations against him will be addressed through the legal process.
For now, the case remains under the jurisdiction of the authorities and the courts, where the allegations will be evaluated based on the evidence presented.
