Tiger Woods’ son Charlie Woods remains within striking distance at the Junior Players Championship after battling inconsistency at TPC Sawgrass—but a crowded leaderboard stands between him and a potential breakthrough victory.
Charlie Woods kept himself in contention at one of junior golf’s biggest stages despite an up-and-down second round Saturday, carding a 1-over-par 73 to remain just four strokes off the lead heading into the final round of the Junior Players Championship.
The 17-year-old Woods is even par through 36 holes at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, following his opening-round 1-under 71. He enters the final round tied for 14th in a tightly packed leaderboard, where one strong Sunday performance could dramatically change the standings.
Hot Start, Tough Middle, Strong Finish
Woods opened his second round with promise, making birdies on the second and third holes to quickly move under par for the day.
But momentum proved difficult to sustain.
Bogeys at Nos. 4 and 6 brought him back, and although Woods settled into a run of pars, his round continued to swing in both directions on the back nine.
He birdied the 10th hole but immediately gave shots back with bogeys on the par-5 11th and par-4 12th. Another bogey at the par-5 16th left Woods fighting to keep pace with the leaders.
Still, he showed resilience down the stretch.
Woods made par for the second consecutive day at the famous island-green 17th before closing with a birdie at No. 18 to salvage a 73 and finish the day at even par for the tournament. His second round featured four birdies and five bogeys.
Three-Way Tie at the Top
Sam Carraher, Giuseppe Puebla and Dawson Lew share the 36-hole lead at 4-under-par, putting Woods four shots behind the leaders.
The leaderboard remains congested, however, with several players positioned between Woods and the top spot.
Chase Bauer, who led after the opening round with a 5-under 67, slipped back after posting a 2-over 74 in the second round. Brady Barnum joined Bauer at 3 under, while other contenders remain within range heading into Sunday.
That congestion could work in Woods’ favor—or make his path even more difficult.
With only four shots separating him from the lead, Woods has a realistic mathematical chance. But he will likely need a cleaner round and fewer mistakes than Saturday if he hopes to challenge for the title.
A Better Showing at Tiger Woods’ Old Battleground
TPC Sawgrass carries special significance for the Woods family.
Tiger Woods won The Players Championship at the Stadium Course twice, capturing the prestigious tournament in 2001 and 2013. Charlie, meanwhile, continues to improve at a course that gave him problems during last year’s Junior Players Championship, where he finished tied for 31st after rounds of 76, 75 and 72.
His opening 71 this week marked his lowest competitive round at the Stadium Course.
That first-round performance also included one of the tournament’s early highlights when Woods saved par at the intimidating 17th hole after his tee shot narrowly avoided the water and came to rest on a footpath near the island green.
Woods chipped close and converted the par putt before later rolling in an 18-foot birdie putt at the 18th.
Final Round Could Be a Defining Test
Sunday now presents Woods with another opportunity to show how far his game has progressed.
The teenager has experienced both highs and setbacks throughout his recent junior golf campaign. He missed the 54-hole cut at the Junior PGA Championship in July, but also demonstrated his ability to compete under pressure at other major junior events, including the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Off the course, Woods also recently announced an NIL partnership with TaylorMade, adding to the growing attention surrounding one of golf’s most closely watched young players.
But at TPC Sawgrass, the focus is now squarely back on golf.
Charlie Woods is four shots behind with 18 holes remaining.
The question now: Can Tiger Woods’ son produce the kind of final-round charge that turns a solid tournament into his biggest statement yet?
