A 65-year-old Singaporean plumber has pleaded guilty to five charges after breaking into the home where his domestic helper girlfriend worked and assaulting her after she decided to end their relationship.
The man, identified as Chua Kok Poi, had been working as a plumber at a private residence in Telok Kurau, while the woman was employed there as a domestic helper. The two developed a romantic relationship, but she later decided to separate from him as her employment contract was ending and she planned to return to her home country.
According to court documents, Chua entered the property between 10pm on March 21 and 5am on March 22 by climbing over a wall. He then made his way to the woman’s bedroom.
The woman was awakened by the noise and found Chua on top of her. He allegedly pulled her hair, slammed her head against the floor and assaulted her. She later underwent a medical examination, where a bruise was found on her scalp.
Chua also admitted to theft involving three mobile phones and S$150 in cash. The items were later returned to the victim.
During mitigation, his lawyer said Chua had no previous convictions and had cooperated with investigators. The defence also said he acted out of desperation in an attempt to save the relationship.
The court was told that Chua had claimed the woman had accepted his marriage proposal and that he had spent a significant amount of money on her during their relationship.
Chua is currently out on S$20,000 bail. He has also indicated that he is willing to compensate the woman for her medical expenses.
Sentencing has been adjourned to Oct 1.
The case has raised renewed attention on the risks that can emerge when a relationship ends and one party refuses to accept the separation. The next court hearing will determine what punishment Chua ultimately receives for the offences to which he has pleaded guilty.
