AI-generated actress Tilly Norwood became the centre of an unexpected viral moment after suddenly switching from English to Cantonese during an interview with Piers Morgan.
Norwood appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored alongside actor and director Tom Conti to promote Misaligned, the upcoming feature film in which she is presented as a digital performer. During the interview, Conti asked whether the other actors in the film were real people or computer-generated characters.
Norwood initially gave a broad answer about Misaligned being a hybrid production involving human directors, writers and editors. When Conti pressed her for a direct answer, she began explaining that the other performers were “digital twins, just like me” before abruptly stopping and switching into Cantonese for roughly 15 seconds.
The unexpected language change left both Morgan and Conti visibly confused. Morgan then asked why she had suddenly started speaking Chinese “completely randomly”.
Norwood apologised and described the incident as a “little hiccup”, saying that sometimes her “wires get a bit crossed”. She added that the switch was a “curveball” even for her and suggested such incidents were unusual.
The episode quickly spread online, adding another unusual moment to Norwood’s promotional tour for Misaligned. The film’s promotion has attracted attention because Norwood is not a human performer but an AI-generated digital character created by Particle6’s AI talent division.
There is also a twist to the apparent malfunction. Norwood’s creator, Eline van der Velden, later suggested that the Cantonese switch may not have been an accidental technical failure. In comments reported by Deadline, she said Norwood could be “a bit of a show-off” and speculated that she may simply have wanted to demonstrate her language abilities.
Particle6 has also explained that the version of Norwood used for interviews is a separate system known as “Talking Tilly”, rather than simply the same AI model used to portray the character. Reports say the interview system is powered by a large language model with a detailed prompt and a knowledge base covering Norwood’s fictional world, work and views.
Norwood’s appearance has also revived a much bigger debate surrounding synthetic performers. Her creation has previously drawn criticism from actors and entertainment figures concerned about AI-generated performers and their potential impact on human talent. SAG-AFTRA has maintained that synthetic performers should not replace human performers and has raised questions about how AI-generated characters are created and used.
For now, the Cantonese episode has given Misaligned an unexpected burst of attention before its release. But the bigger question surrounding Tilly Norwood remains whether audiences and the entertainment industry will ultimately view AI performers as a new creative tool — or as a challenge to the role of human actors.
