Aichi-Nagoya, Japan — Alas Pilipinas’ Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons wasted no time making their presence felt in their first Asian Games appearance, overpowering Bangladesh in straight sets, 21-6, 21-6, on Sunday at the Hekinan Ryokuchi Beach Court.
The Philippine duo controlled the match from the opening exchanges, producing a dominant two-set victory to begin their Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games campaign on a high note.
The result was particularly significant for the tandem known as “SiPons,” as Rondina and Pons were making their long-awaited Asiad debut after building momentum on the international beach volleyball circuit.
A debut that lived up to the hype
Rondina and Pons entered the Asian Games with considerable expectations following their breakthrough performance at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, where the Philippines captured its first women’s beach volleyball gold in the competition.
The pair had also accumulated international experience ahead of the Asiad, including a silver medal at the AVC Beach Tour Pingtung Open in Taiwan earlier this year.
Their Asian Games preparations also included appearances in international tournaments, with the duo stepping away from their respective PVL commitments to focus on their national-team campaign. Philstar previously reported that Rondina and Pons were being prepared for several international events as part of their buildup to the Asiad.
From SEA Games champions to Asian Games contenders
The transition from Southeast Asian competition to the Asian Games represents a much bigger challenge.
Before the tournament, Rondina and Pons said they were targeting a podium finish, while acknowledging that the level of competition would be considerably tougher.
Daily Tribune reported that the duo had been preparing for months and had competed in international events, including tournaments where they earned silver medals. The pair also emphasized consistency, teamwork and enjoying their first Asiad experience.
Sports Inquirer likewise reported before the competition that Pons viewed a podium finish as the tandem’s realistic target, while Rondina stressed the importance of embracing the opportunity to compete against some of Asia’s strongest teams.
The road gets tougher from here
The emphatic win over Bangladesh provides the Philippines with an ideal opening, but the tournament is far from over.
The Philippine pair is scheduled to face Kazakhstan’s Merey Kozhakhmet and Laura Kabulbekova in the next stage of Pool E action.
The Kazakh pair is familiar territory for Rondina and Pons. At the 2026 AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Championship, Kabulbekova and Kozhakhmet were among the teams in contention, with Kazakhstan eventually advancing through the knockout stages.
That earlier continental tournament also showed how demanding the Asian beach volleyball landscape can be. Rondina and Pons were beaten by Thailand’s Patcharaporn Seehawong and Salinda Mungkhon in three sets in pool play before continuing into the knockout rounds.
A bigger goal for Philippine beach volleyball
Rondina and Pons are not simply chasing another international victory. Their campaign also carries the weight of Philippine beach volleyball’s pursuit of its first Asian Games medal.
The Philippines has yet to win a beach volleyball medal at the Asian Games, according to Spin.ph’s preview of the tandem’s Asiad debut.
That makes every match in Aichi-Nagoya increasingly important.
For now, however, SiPons have delivered exactly what the Philippine delegation wanted from its opening match: a statement performance without dropping a set.
The 21-6, 21-6 victory puts Rondina and Pons on the board—but the bigger question is whether their dominant start can carry them deeper into the Asian Games tournament.
And that answer will come when the competition gets considerably tougher.
