SAMAL ISLAND, Davao del Norte — The spotlight will fall on two of the Philippines’ rising endurance athletes when the Damosa Land 5150 Triathlon unfolds on Sunday, September 20, with James Earl Ting and Edgie Arances poised for a closely watched battle for the Filipino Elite men’s crown.
The race, staged on Samal Island, will feature the demanding Olympic-distance format of a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run. Ting and Arances are expected to lead the local elite field, while Anisha Eunice Caluya headlines the women’s side.
Ting brings winning momentum
Ting enters Samal with significant momentum after winning the Subic International Triathlon and finishing third in the Sun Life 5150 Bohol last July.
His Bohol performance placed him behind Filipino Elite champion Dayshaun Ramos and runner-up Joshua Ramos, while Ting finished ahead of several other established competitors.
That recent form makes Ting one of the key names to watch as the 5150 Islands of the Philippines Series reaches its finale.
Arances, meanwhile, brings experience from both domestic and international endurance competitions, setting up what race organizers and reports describe as an intriguing duel between two emerging Filipino triathlon talents.
A different challenge awaits in Samal
The Samal course will test all three disciplines.
Athletes must first negotiate the 1.5-kilometer open-water swim before tackling the 40-kilometer bike segment and finishing with a 10-kilometer run.
Unlike shorter sprint-distance races, the Olympic-distance format places a premium on pacing, transitions and the ability to maintain speed across all three disciplines.
The event’s Filipino Elite Category is designed to give high-performance Filipino athletes and national team members an opportunity to compete under championship conditions while developing the race experience required for larger domestic and international competitions.
Caluya leads the women’s Elite field
The women’s Filipino Elite division will feature Anisha Eunice Caluya, who arrives with a strong junior-level credential after winning gold in the Sprint Junior Elite Women’s category at the 2026 National Age Group Aquathlon.
Caluya will now face the significantly longer Olympic-distance challenge in Samal, giving her an opportunity to measure her development against a higher-level field.
Defending overall champions return
The Filipino Elite duel is only part of the weekend’s story.
Defending overall champions Eryk Omandam and Natasha Doromal-Lim are also returning to Samal, aiming to repeat their victories from the inaugural Damosa Land 5150 last year. Their presence adds another layer to an already competitive field that includes athletes from across the Philippines.
The event is organized by Sunrise Events Inc. and serves as the final stop of the inaugural 5150 Triathlon Islands of the Philippines Series, which has taken competitors to island destinations including Guimaras, Camiguin, Bohol and Samal.
The series has combined elite competition with sports tourism, using scenic Philippine destinations as venues for Olympic-distance triathlon.
From Bohol to Samal
The Samal finale follows the milestone 10th staging of the 5150 Bohol Triathlon, where Dayshaun Ramos captured the men’s Filipino Elite crown in 2:09:58, holding off his older brother Joshua Ramos, who finished in 2:12:45. Earl James Ting was third in 2:17:42.
Earlier in the season, Joshua Ramos won the Filipino Elite crown at the inaugural 5150 Guimaras, clocking 2:14:00 and posting the fastest run split of 38:50.
Those results underline the depth of the current Filipino men’s triathlon scene—and explain why the Ting-Arances matchup in Samal is attracting attention.
With the series finale approaching, the question now shifts from who has built momentum during the season to who can put together the strongest performance across all three disciplines when the pressure rises on race day.
And with Ting’s recent victory and podium finish on one side and Arances’ experience on the other, the Filipino Elite men’s crown could come down to how the two contenders handle the final kilometers of the run.
The race begins Sunday. The real battle may not be decided until the final stretch.
