CESAFI Volleyball Returns With a Bang—Can the Reigning Champions Survive a Loaded 7-Match Slate?

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The road to another CESAFI volleyball championship begins with a demanding test for the reigning University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters as the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) rolls out a packed seven-match slate.

UC enters the new campaign carrying the confidence of a defending champion. The Webmasters captured the CESAFI Season 25 men’s volleyball championship in January, surviving the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers in a dramatic five-set finale, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 20-25, 22-20.

The victory gave UC a back-to-back CESAFI men’s volleyball title, with Quiades Labos earning Finals MVP honors after helping the Webmasters withstand USPF’s late comeback.

Now, the challenge is different: defending that championship in a new season while facing a demanding schedule.

The latest CESAFI campaign is part of Season 26, which officially got underway on August 29, 2026. The league’s current season features multiple divisions and has brought several new teams into the competition, adding another layer of competition to Cebu’s premier inter-school sports league.

UC’s title defense faces a bigger test

The Webmasters will not be able to rely solely on last season’s success. A championship defense requires consistency throughout the schedule, particularly against familiar CESAFI rivals that have repeatedly challenged UC for volleyball supremacy.

Last season’s championship match demonstrated just how narrow the margin can be. UC appeared headed for a straight-set victory after taking the opening two sets, but USPF answered by winning the third and fourth frames and forcing a deciding fifth set.

The Webmasters eventually prevailed 22-20 in the fifth, turning the finale into one of the season’s closest championship battles.

That experience could prove important as UC begins another title campaign.

More than one champion is chasing history

The volleyball storyline also comes amid a broader CESAFI season filled with defending champions and teams pursuing their own championship streaks.

In the college basketball division, for example, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers entered Season 26 as four-time defending champions, while UC remained among the teams looking to challenge UV’s reign.

Meanwhile, the high school competition features Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) chasing a sixth consecutive juniors basketball crown, illustrating the championship streaks developing across CESAFI sports.

For UC volleyball, however, the immediate objective is straightforward: protect the crown and establish another championship run.

With a seven-match slate ahead, every result could become important as the Webmasters attempt to turn their back-to-back championship into another title.

The question now is whether the reigning champions can maintain the same composure that carried them through last season’s five-set thriller—or whether one of their rivals will finally find a way to break UC’s championship run.

The next chapter of CESAFI volleyball is about to begin, and the defending champions will have a target on their backs from the opening serve.
