A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Leyte on Thursday afternoon, September 17, 2026, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The tectonic earthquake occurred at 3:59 p.m. and was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres. PHIVOLCS placed the epicentre about eight kilometres southeast of Leyte town.
The quake was recorded at Instrumental Intensity III in Kananga and Villaba, Leyte, and Intensity II in Alangalang and Ormoc City. Intensity I was recorded in San Jorge and Villareal in Samar.
PHIVOLCS said it did not expect damage or aftershocks from the earthquake. The agency also received reports that the shaking was felt in some areas of Cebu.
The earthquake was part of a series of recent seismic activity monitored in the region, although PHIVOLCS said no additional bulletin would be issued unless new information became available.
