US and Vietnam Firms Sign Deals as Vietnamese Leader Visits New York

Companies from the United States and Vietnam have signed a series of agreements as Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary To Lam travels to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, according to documents reviewed by Reuters.

The agreements cover areas including aviation, energy, technology and infrastructure, reflecting efforts to expand economic ties between the two countries.

Vietnam Airlines signed an agreement with Boeing for the purchase of 50 Boeing 737 Max aircraft, according to the documents. The deal is part of the carrier’s plans to expand and modernise its fleet.

US energy company AES also signed agreements related to power projects in Vietnam, while other US businesses reached arrangements involving technology and industrial cooperation.

The agreements come as Vietnam seeks to strengthen its economic relationship with the United States while navigating changes in global trade and supply chains.

Vietnam has been working to attract more foreign investment in sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, manufacturing and energy. US companies have increasingly looked to Vietnam as part of efforts to diversify production and supply chains in Asia.

Lam’s visit to New York includes meetings with US business leaders and other officials alongside his participation in the UN General Assembly.

The United States and Vietnam upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2023, reflecting growing cooperation in trade, investment, technology, security and other areas.

Economic relations have expanded significantly in recent years. The United States is one of Vietnam’s largest export markets, while American companies have increased investment and commercial activity in the country.

The latest agreements could provide opportunities for companies on both sides while supporting Vietnam’s efforts to develop infrastructure and strengthen its industrial and technological capabilities.

However, the deals come amid broader uncertainty over US trade policy and tariffs, which have increased pressure on Asian exporters and encouraged companies to reassess their production networks.

Vietnamese and US officials are expected to continue discussions on trade and investment as both sides seek to deepen economic ties while addressing differences over market access and trade balances.
