LOS ANGELES — Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski have confirmed that their nine-year marriage has ended, revealing that the separation actually happened before the public knew anything was wrong.
The Mamma Mia! and The Dropout star, 40, and Sadoski, 50, issued a joint statement confirming that they had been separated “for a while” and had concluded that the change was right for their family. They also stressed that they still expect to remain part of each other’s lives.
The announcement, made public on September 15, ends a relationship that was unusually private by Hollywood standards: the actors quietly eloped in 2017, raised two children largely away from Los Angeles and built a family life around a farm in upstate New York.
But one important point remains unclear.
Neither Seyfried nor Sadoski has publicly explained what led to their separation. The reports reviewed for this story also did not cite a publicly announced divorce filing, despite some headlines already describing the couple as “divorcing.” What has been directly confirmed by the couple is their separation.
They Say the Split Actually Happened ‘a While’ Ago
The biggest new detail in the announcement is not simply that the marriage is over.
It is that the public learned about it only after the couple had apparently already been living with the decision for some time.
In their statement to People, Seyfried and Sadoski said they had been separated for a while and believed the arrangement had proven to be the right choice for their family. Their message was notably warm rather than adversarial, emphasizing an enduring connection even after the romantic relationship ended.
That fits a pattern that defined much of their relationship.
Major personal milestones often became public only after the fact.
Their marriage itself was initially kept secret. Their family life remained largely outside celebrity media. And now their separation followed the same pattern: privately handled first, publicly acknowledged later.
They First Met on Stage — But Did Not Start Dating Immediately
Seyfried and Sadoski first met in 2015 when they starred opposite each other in Neil LaBute’s Off-Broadway play The Way We Get By.
At that time, both were in other relationships.
Seyfried was dating actor Justin Long, while Sadoski was married to casting executive Kimberly Hope. Reporting on the couple’s history says their relationship during the stage production was platonic. Both of those earlier relationships ended separately later in 2015.
Seyfried and Sadoski then reunited professionally while making the film The Last Word in 2016.
Their relationship became romantic during that period, and they became engaged later that year.
That history makes the breakup especially notable for longtime fans because their relationship essentially grew out of two acting collaborations before becoming a marriage and family partnership.
Their Wedding Was Almost the Opposite of a Hollywood Ceremony
There was no huge guest list, celebrity-packed reception or elaborate red carpet.
Seyfried and Sadoski eloped in March 2017 in an extremely private ceremony.
Sadoski later revealed that the wedding involved essentially the two of them, an officiant and Seyfried’s beloved dog Finn.
Shortly afterward, they welcomed their daughter, Nina.
Their second child, a son, was born in September 2020.
And that second child provides an important correction to much of the current breakup coverage.
Their Son Is Not Named Thomas Jr.
A surprising number of reports about the separation identify the couple’s son as Thomas Jr.
That is incorrect according to Seyfried herself.
During a March 2025 interview with Extra, Seyfried directly addressed the widespread assumption and said people had somehow started calling her son Thomas even though that is not his name. She said she enjoyed the fact that his real name remained secret.
Seyfried and Sadoski have never publicly disclosed their son’s actual name.
So the accurate description is that they share daughter Nina and a son whose name they have kept private.
The mistake has persisted into some 2026 separation coverage, illustrating how quickly an incorrect celebrity detail can be repeated until it appears established.
They Built Their Family Life Far From Hollywood
For much of their marriage, Seyfried and Sadoski centered their lives around an upstate New York farm rather than Hollywood.
Seyfried bought the Catskills-area property before their marriage and eventually turned it into an animal-rescue operation registered as a nonprofit. The property has housed horses, goats, donkeys, chickens, ducks, cats and other animals.
In a January 2026 Vogue profile — only months before the separation became public — Seyfried described home life as central to how she organizes her career.
She said she increasingly had enough professional leverage to protect time with her children and structure filming around returning home to them. Vogue also reported at the time that Sadoski remained part of that household and family routine.
That makes the timing notable.
As recently as early 2026, the marriage was still being publicly described as part of the stable family structure supporting Seyfried through an especially busy period in her career.
Seyfried Had Recently Praised Sadoski’s Sacrifices
Seyfried also spoke warmly about Sadoski’s support during that period.
In her January Vogue interview, she discussed the unusually strong run of acting opportunities coming her way and acknowledged that her husband made significant sacrifices to help support her professional schedule and their family.
Her career has been operating at a particularly high level.
Following her Emmy-winning performance as Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout, Seyfried continued taking prominent film and television roles, including Long Bright River, The Housemaid and The Testament of Ann Lee. She received two Golden Globe nominations entering 2026.
That does not establish any connection between career demands and the separation.
Neither Seyfried nor Sadoski has attributed their breakup to work, scheduling or any other specific cause.
Those earlier comments are significant only because they show that she continued speaking appreciatively of Sadoski even relatively recently.
Rumors Started at the Toronto International Film Festival
Before the formal announcement, some entertainment outlets had begun questioning the marriage after Seyfried appeared at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival without her wedding ring.
In retrospect, that appearance occurred during a period when the couple says they had already separated.
But a missing ring by itself would not have established that fact.
The confirmation came only when Seyfried and Sadoski chose to release their joint statement.
That distinction matters in celebrity reporting, where physical appearances, jewelry and social-media behavior frequently generate breakup speculation before anyone involved has actually confirmed a change in relationship status.
Even More Unexpected: Seyfried Was Still Posting About Sadoski
What makes the timeline less conventional is that Seyfried had not erased Sadoski from her public life.
Around the time their separation became public, she shared an Instagram Story showing Sadoski posing with a reptile and jokingly referred to him as a “reptile dad.”
That post is consistent with the tone of their separation statement: their marriage has changed, but neither has publicly portrayed the other as an enemy.
It would still be premature to make detailed claims about their co-parenting arrangements or private relationship, because neither has disclosed those terms.
What can be said is that their own public message emphasizes continued connection rather than a hostile rupture.
Their Children Appear to Be at the Center of the Transition
The couple specifically framed the separation around what works for their “family unit.”
They have traditionally been highly protective of their children.
Although their daughter Nina’s name is public, their son’s remains private, and Seyfried has generally kept both children away from sustained celebrity exposure.
Vogue reported earlier this year that both children attended a local village school near the family’s farm, reinforcing how deliberately Seyfried had built a childhood for them outside the center of the entertainment industry.
Sadoski and Seyfried have also previously spoken about parenting as a shared responsibility.
That family history gives extra weight to their decision to announce the breakup jointly rather than through competing representatives or anonymous-source accusations.
There Has Been No Public Explanation for Why the Marriage Ended
That absence of detail is important.
There are currently no confirmed allegations of infidelity, misconduct or a dramatic falling-out tied to the separation in the statements reviewed for this story.
Seyfried and Sadoski have simply said they had already separated and believe it was the appropriate decision for their family.
Anything more specific about the cause would therefore be speculation.
That also means recent social-media posts, the absence of a wedding ring and Seyfried’s Los Angeles property listing should not be independently presented as proof of why they separated.
Entertainment Weekly and the Los Angeles Times noted those surrounding developments, but neither the actors nor their representatives publicly connected them to a specific reason for ending the marriage.
Has Either One Filed for Divorce?
Some headlines already use the word “divorce.”
The couple themselves have publicly confirmed a separation.
As of the September 16 reports reviewed here, major coverage citing their joint statement did not identify a divorce petition, case number or court filing by either Seyfried or Sadoski.
That does not mean a legal divorce will not occur.
It simply means the accurate current wording is that they have separated after nine years of marriage, unless and until a legal filing is independently confirmed.
For a news story, that distinction is more than semantics.
Separation describes the confirmed relationship status.
Divorce describes a legal process that requires its own evidence.
A Very Private Marriage Is Ending in a Very Private Way
Seyfried and Sadoski spent years doing something relatively unusual for two working actors: keeping most of their marriage outside the celebrity-news cycle.
They quietly married.
They built a family life in the Catskills.
They kept one child’s name private.
And despite their public careers, many details of their home life remained their own.
Their breakup is following much the same pattern.
By the time the world learned they were separating, the decision had apparently already been lived with privately for some time.
There is no detailed public explanation.
There is no publicly cited court battle in the reporting reviewed.
And their own statement suggests they want the relationship to evolve rather than disappear completely.
For fans who saw them as one of Hollywood’s quieter long-term couples, the news is still surprising.
But perhaps the biggest surprise is how long the separation remained private before either of them felt the need to announce it at all.
