A knife attack in Guangzhou left multiple people injured on Monday evening after a man reportedly attacked pedestrians outside a hotpot restaurant in the city’s university town district.
Police arrested a 35-year-old male suspect following the incident in Xiaoguwei Island, Panyu district, as authorities moved quickly to secure the area and assist the injured.
Attack reported near hotpot restaurant
Emergency services began receiving reports of multiple stabbings at around 5:20 p.m. local time, according to Guangzhou police.
The attack took place in front of a hotpot restaurant in the Xiaoguwei Island area, a busy part of Guangzhou’s university town.
Police said officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports that a man was wielding a knife and injuring pedestrians.
The suspect was subsequently apprehended.
Victims taken to hospital
Several people were injured during the attack and were transported to hospital for treatment.
Police said none of the injured victims were in a life-threatening condition after receiving medical attention.
Images circulating online appeared to show several bloodied people sitting on the ground near the scene, although authorities have not released a complete breakdown of the number or identities of those injured.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Suspect reportedly targeted pedestrians
Initial reports indicate that the suspect appeared to target people passing through the area rather than being involved in a dispute at the restaurant.
Online images and videos appeared to show victims suffering facial injuries.
Police have not yet publicly established a motive for the attack.
