More than 1,300 Taiwanese and Taiwanese American fans turned Fenway Park into a sea of Taiwan pride on September 12, forming the word “TAIWAN” in the stands during the Boston Red Sox game against the Kansas City Royals.
The gathering, organized by the Brookline Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, brought together members of the Taiwanese community from Massachusetts and other parts of the United States for Taiwan Fan Night at Fenway. Participants wore Taiwan-themed clothing and coordinated their positions in the stands to create the giant letters.
The visual display was more than a baseball cheer. Organizers said the event was intended to highlight the unity of the Taiwanese community in Greater Boston while using baseball as a way to strengthen cultural connections between Taiwan and the city.
During the sixth inning, supporters also arranged themselves to spell “TW ❤️ SOX,” showing their support for the hometown team. The Boston Red Sox ultimately defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-1.
Before the game, participants gathered outside the historic ballpark for photographs, while a “We Are Team Taiwan” banner added to the celebration.
Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston Director-General Charles Liao and Overseas Community Affairs Council Commissioner for Greater Boston Kuo Ching-ru represented the Taiwanese community during a special pregame recognition. The Red Sox invited both onto the field as the organization recognized the Team Taiwan group.
Liao described the gathering as the largest event organized by Taiwanese fans in Boston since he assumed his position. He emphasized baseball’s importance to Taiwanese culture and said the event could help introduce Taiwan and its community in Boston to a wider audience.
The event may also be a preview of something bigger.
Organizers are hoping the successful turnout will help pave the way for an official Red Sox Taiwan Celebration Day at Fenway Park in 2027. The event organizers have promoted the gathering as an important step toward making that goal a reality.
The organizers’ message is straightforward: Taiwan’s community in Boston wants to be seen not simply as a collection of individuals, but as a connected and active community capable of coming together around culture, baseball and shared identity.
With more than 1,300 people participating, the image created inside one of baseball’s most recognizable stadiums delivered that message on a very large scale.
Why It Matters
Taiwan has a deep baseball culture, and Taiwanese fans have repeatedly demonstrated their passion on the international baseball stage. Earlier in 2026, thousands of supporters traveled to Japan for the World Baseball Classic, where Taiwan’s fan base became one of the tournament’s notable sources of energy and support.
At Fenway Park, however, the focus was not an international tournament. It was the Taiwanese diaspora using America’s national pastime to celebrate its community and increase Taiwan’s visibility in Boston.
The giant “TAIWAN” formation therefore became both a baseball moment and a community statement—one that organizers hope could lead to an even larger Taiwan-themed celebration at Fenway Park next year.
