SINGAPORE — Planning to grab your favourite chicken rice, nasi lemak or kopi this week? You may want to check the calendar first.
A total of 28 hawker centres and markets across Singapore will temporarily close between Sept 14 and Sept 20, 2026, for scheduled cleaning, meaning regular customers will need to make alternative dining plans on the affected dates.
The closures range from one to four days, with some of Singapore’s well-known food destinations, including Maxwell Food Centre, Whampoa Drive Makan Place and Yuhua Market and Hawker Centre, among those affected.
The cleaning is part of Singapore’s regular hawker-centre maintenance programme. The National Environment Agency (NEA) says such cleaning helps ensure that hawker centres remain clean and hygienic while continuing to provide affordable food to the public.

Maxwell Food Centre among the biggest names affected
One of the most notable closures is Maxwell Food Centre, a major food destination in the Chinatown area.
The centre will be closed from Sept 14 to 16, so diners hoping to visit its popular stalls during those three days will need to find alternatives.
Whampoa Drive Makan Place/Whampoa Market will also close from Sept 14 to 15. The centre is home to numerous popular hawker stalls, making the two-day closure particularly relevant to regular customers. Current hawker-centre listings also identify its next scheduled closure as Sept 21 for another section of the Whampoa complex, highlighting why diners should check the specific centre and date before making a trip.
Some closures are not just for cleaning
There is an important distinction between the short cleaning closures and longer repairs and redecoration works.
Two locations will begin much longer R&R works on Sept 14.
Kim Keat Palm Market and Food Centre at Toa Payoh Lorong 7 is scheduled to undergo works until Dec 13, while Blk 726 Clementi West Street 2 will be closed for works until Dec 27.
That means customers should not confuse these longer closures with the one- or two-day spring-cleaning shutdowns.
Why Singapore hawker centres close for cleaning
Hawker centres are a major part of Singapore’s food culture, but keeping them clean requires periodic maintenance.
NEA says it conducts regular spring cleaning and R&R works at centres under the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment. For HDB-owned centres, the relevant Town Councils are responsible for the cleaning and R&R work.

The affected centres are expected to resume operations after their scheduled cleaning period, subject to any additional notices or individual stall arrangements.
