NHA TRANG, Vietnam — The Philippines has finally done what had eluded its male pageant representatives before: John Eriq Bonifacio has captured the Mister Cosmopolitan 2026 crown, delivering the country’s first-ever victory in the international competition.
The 27-year-old Filipino from Macabebe, Pampanga, emerged as the winner of the fourth edition of Mister Cosmopolitan in Nha Trang, Vietnam, on Saturday, September 12, ending what Philippine pageant fans had dubbed the country’s “Vietnam curse.”
Bonifacio’s victory was even more impressive after he collected two major preliminary distinctions—Best Physique and Best Catwalk—before claiming the main crown. GMA News also confirmed that he was the Philippines’ first Mister Cosmopolitan winner.
From runner-up heartbreak to the crown
The historic win comes a year after another Filipino came agonizingly close.
In 2025, Kenneth Marcelino finished as first runner-up at Mister Cosmopolitan in Bangkok, Thailand. That near-win raised hopes that the Philippines could eventually capture the title. This year, Bonifacio finally completed the breakthrough.
The contrast made Bonifacio’s victory particularly significant for the country’s pageant community: the Philippines went from first runner-up in 2025 to champion in 2026.
Jonas Gaffud, CEO of Empire.ph and a key figure behind the Mister Pilipinas Worldwide organization, personally supported Bonifacio’s campaign in Vietnam and celebrated the breakthrough following the victory.
Bonifacio’s message to Filipinos
Following his historic victory, Bonifacio expressed his gratitude to Filipino supporters who backed his campaign.
“We did it guys! Mabuhay Philippines. Para sa inyo ito. Mahal ko kayong lahat!”
GMA News reported that the message was posted through Mister Pilipinas Worldwide’s social media channels after his victory.
For Bonifacio, the crown represents more than a personal achievement. It also marks a new milestone for the Philippines in the rapidly growing world of international men’s pageantry.
Who did Bonifacio beat?
Bonifacio defeated a competitive international field and topped the final five alongside representatives from South Africa, Thailand, Türkiye and Spain.

A journey that started in Pampanga
Bonifacio’s international campaign began after he was selected by Mister Pilipinas Worldwide as the Philippines’ representative to Mister Cosmopolitan.
He had previously been crowned Mister Pilipinas Cosmopolitan 2026 during the Mister Pilipinas Worldwide competition in Mandaluyong in April.
His selection meant he would carry the Philippines’ hopes on the international stage—and he ultimately delivered the country’s biggest result in the competition to date.
The Philippines’ breakthrough in Vietnam
The significance of Bonifacio’s win goes beyond another pageant crown.
The Philippines has traditionally been one of the strongest countries in international beauty competitions, but the Mister Cosmopolitan title had remained out of reach. The previous year’s first-runner-up finish by Marcelino suggested that the country was getting closer.
Bonifacio’s victory now changes that narrative.
The Philippines is no longer chasing the Mister Cosmopolitan crown. It finally owns it.
And after the near miss in 2025, the timing of the breakthrough could hardly be more dramatic.
