LONDON — Michail Antonio has completed an emotional return to English football, signing a one-year contract with Championship side Watford after battling back from the serious car accident that threatened to derail his career.
The 36-year-old forward joins Watford as a free agent, ending his spell away from English football and opening a new chapter nearly two years after the December 2024 crash that left him with multiple fractures to his thigh bone.
For Antonio, the move represents far more than another transfer.
It is the latest step in a comeback that once appeared highly uncertain.
From devastating crash to a new beginning
Antonio was involved in a serious road accident in Essex in December 2024 while returning home from training with West Ham United.
The injuries included four fractures to his femur, requiring surgery and an extended rehabilitation period. He did not play for West Ham again after the accident.
The striker later described the experience as life-changing and said he believed he had been given another chance at life.
Despite the setback, Antonio continued working toward a return to professional football.
West Ham eventually released him when his contract expired in August 2025. He subsequently trained with several English clubs before moving to Qatar, where he joined Al-Sailiya in March 2026.
He made four league appearances for the Qatari club before setting his sights on a return to England.
Watford gives Antonio another chance
Watford’s decision to sign Antonio follows several weeks of training with the Championship club.
The move had been anticipated after Antonio began working with Watford during the summer while attempting to prove he was ready for another competitive challenge in English football.
Watford have now committed to the veteran forward with a one-year deal.
Antonio’s arrival also gives the Hornets a player with extensive experience in both the Premier League and Championship.
Before establishing himself as a Premier League striker, he played for Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest in the Championship.
He has accumulated 142 Championship appearances and 28 goals, according to BBC-linked reporting on his career.
A West Ham record that speaks for itself
Antonio spent a decade at West Ham United, becoming one of the club’s most important players of the Premier League era.
He scored 68 Premier League goals in 268 appearances, making him West Ham’s all-time leading scorer in the competition. The club’s own records confirm both figures.
Across all competitions for the Hammers, Antonio made 323 appearances and scored 83 goals.
He also helped West Ham win the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023, adding a major European trophy to his career.
His combination of physical strength, pace and versatility made him a key figure for the London club, where he eventually became a regular center-forward after spending parts of his career in several different positions.
But Antonio still has something to prove
The biggest question surrounding the Watford move is not his past.
It is whether his body can withstand the demands of Championship football after such a serious injury and a long period away from the English game.
Antonio has already acknowledged that he needs to regain full match fitness.
After signing, he said Watford has a good group of players and expressed hope that he could contribute to the club’s success once he is fully up to speed.
That could mean Antonio’s initial role is carefully managed rather than immediately becoming Watford’s starting striker.
Recent reporting indicates that the club sees value in both his experience and leadership, particularly with younger forwards in the squad.
Watford could use his experience
The Hornets have made a mixed start to the 2026-27 Championship campaign.
Watford entered the weekend with eight points from six matches, leaving them 12th in the table.
Antonio therefore arrives at a club looking for greater attacking depth and consistency.
BBC Sport previously reported that Watford were seeking additional attacking options and that Antonio’s experience could provide an important boost to a relatively young group of forwards.
The veteran’s ability to play across attacking positions could also give manager Alessio Dionisi another option as the season develops.
The road back has been anything but easy
Antonio’s journey back to England has included several setbacks.
Following his release by West Ham, he trained with clubs including Leicester City and had discussions involving other Championship sides. Some potential moves did not materialize, with fitness setbacks complicating his efforts to secure a permanent return.
His move to Al-Sailiya finally gave him competitive football again.
Although his Qatar spell was brief, it provided an important opportunity to test himself after a lengthy recovery.
Now, Watford has offered him another chance—this time much closer to home and in a league he knows extremely well.
A comeback story that is still being written
Antonio’s return does not guarantee a return to his best form.
At 36, after major surgery and a prolonged period away from English football, there are obvious physical and competitive questions still to answer.
But the Watford move gives him something he has spent nearly two years chasing: another opportunity to play meaningful football in England.
For a player who once feared the consequences of a devastating crash, walking back onto an English football pitch would represent a remarkable milestone in itself.
Now comes the harder part.
Can Michail Antonio turn an extraordinary recovery into one more successful chapter of his football career?
