IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — Nearly 49,200 households in Zamboanga Sibugay are set to receive continuing rice assistance under the Marcos administration’s Bawat Bayan Makikinabang (BBM) Rice Distribution Program, with ₱100 million allocated for the initiative.
The assistance is being funded through the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) and is designed to provide families with more sustained food support rather than a single distribution.
Under the program, qualified households will receive 10 kilograms of rice every other month through the end of 2026, according to the Philippine Information Agency.
The initial distribution was recently held at the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Capitol, with Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo attending as special guest. The rollout marks the start of the province-wide distribution of the rice assistance.
Rice assistance targets household food expenses
For families struggling to stretch limited budgets, the recurring rice distribution could provide direct relief from one of the most basic and unavoidable household expenses.
The government said the assistance is intended to help families redirect some of their money toward other necessities, including education, transportation, healthcare and livelihood needs.
Unlike a one-time food distribution, the every-other-month schedule provides beneficiaries with continuing support for the remainder of the year.
The program also forms part of the administration’s broader food-security agenda, which has expanded into various forms of food assistance and affordable-rice initiatives.
Zamboanga Sibugay already received broader BBM funding
The latest rice assistance comes on top of a much larger package of government support extended to the Zamboanga Peninsula.
On June 29, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. turned over ₱371.8 million under the Socio-Civic Projects Fund component of the Bawat Bayan Makikinabang program to the provincial governments of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga City.
The Philippine News Agency likewise reported that the assistance was intended to address poverty, improve education outcomes and accelerate local development in the region.
The Philippine Star reported that Zamboanga Sibugay received ₱77.8 million during the June 29 turnover, alongside allocations for the other Zamboanga Peninsula LGUs.
That broader funding is separate from the ₱100 million rice assistance now being distributed to qualified households in Zamboanga Sibugay.
Part of a wider government push on food security
The rice distribution also comes as the national government continues expanding its food-security programs.
In July, the administration said its “Benteng Bigas Meron Na” initiative had reached more than 12 million Filipinos, while other local governments were also rolling out rice assistance using LGSF funding under the Bawat Bayan Makikinabang framework.
The approach reflects a broader shift toward delivering national government assistance through local government units, allowing programs to be targeted at communities and households identified for assistance.
In Zamboanga Sibugay, the immediate focus is now on making sure the rice reaches the intended beneficiaries on schedule.
With 49,200 households expected to benefit, the province-wide rollout represents one of the more significant household food-assistance efforts being implemented in the area this year.
For thousands of families, however, the bigger question is no longer simply how much rice is being distributed — but how consistently the promised assistance will reach their tables through the end of 2026.
