MINNEAPOLIS — A deadly shooting inside a downtown Minneapolis apartment building left two people dead, three police officers injured and the suspected gunman dead, authorities said Wednesday.
The shooting unfolded at an apartment building at 15 E. Grant Street shortly after 4:30 p.m., triggering a major police response and warnings for residents to stay away from the surrounding area.
According to Minneapolis police, officers entered the building within minutes of receiving the initial 911 call. They encountered victims inside and then heard additional gunfire coming from an upper floor.
Officers followed the sound and encountered what police described as a haze that significantly limited visibility, adding another layer of danger to the response.
TWO VICTIMS DIED
Police later confirmed that two shooting victims died.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another died after being transported to a hospital.
Hennepin Healthcare received multiple patients following the shooting. Earlier information from the hospital indicated that seven patients were treated in connection with the incident.
The suspected shooter was also found dead. Authorities have not yet publicly explained how the suspect died.
THREE MINNEAPOLIS OFFICERS INJURED
Three Minneapolis police officers were injured during the response, according to police.
Two officers suffered gunshot wounds. One was shot in the leg, while another required surgery. A third officer suffered an apparent non-life-threatening injury.
Hospital officials said the three officers were in stable condition.
The incident prompted a heavy police presence in downtown Minneapolis, with authorities urging residents to avoid the affected area while emergency crews secured the scene.
WITNESSES DESCRIBE CHAOTIC SCENE
Residents described hearing a rapid succession of gunshots as police moved into the apartment building.
One resident told reporters he heard several shots and saw a man he recognized as a resident holding a handgun before fleeing the area.
Another resident said he had encountered someone carrying a handgun in the building earlier in the week and had reported the encounter to building management, according to AP reporting. Authorities have not said whether those accounts are connected to the shooting.
FBI JOINS INVESTIGATION
The FBI said it was assisting local authorities and would provide resources requested by investigators.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz also said state officials were assisting local law enforcement and expressed support for the first responders involved in the operation.
The City of Minneapolis initially confirmed that multiple people, including two police officers, had been injured and asked the public to avoid the area so emergency personnel could safely respond.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Investigators are now working to determine what triggered the shooting, the identity and background of the suspect, how the suspect died and whether anyone else was involved.
Authorities have not announced a motive.
