MANILA, Philippines — The long and grueling journey of thousands of aspiring Filipino lawyers has reached its final chapter for now, with a record 12,010 examinees completing the 2026 Philippine Bar Examinations.
The Supreme Court said the figure represents the highest number of Bar examinees to complete the examinations in Philippine Bar history, after the three-day tests concluded on September 13 across 15 local testing centers nationwide.
But while the examinations are over, the most nerve-racking wait is only beginning: the results are expected in January 2027.
Nearly everyone who started finished
A total of 12,029 examinees showed up for the first day of the 2026 Bar Exams on September 6.
By the second day on September 9, 12,017 returned—equivalent to a 99.9% retention rate.
On the final day, September 13, 12,010 examinees completed the examinations. That means only 19 fewer examinees finished than the number who started Day 1.
The Supreme Court described the final figure as a historic high for Bar finishers.
The exams were administered simultaneously at 15 local testing centers covering Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, continuing the Court’s push toward a more regionalized and digitalized Bar examination system.
More than 13,000 were admitted
The record turnout came from an unusually large pool of candidates.
According to Supreme Court figures, 14,291 hopefuls initially applied for the 2026 Bar Exams, while 13,441 were officially admitted to take them.
Among those who took Day 1 were 6,773 women and 5,256 men.
The youngest examinee was 24 years old, while the oldest was 84. The Supreme Court also reported that 304 persons with disabilities and 285 senior citizens were among the examinees.
The candidates included 45.9% first-time takers, 29.5% previous takers and 24.6% refreshers, highlighting the wide range of examinees competing for a place in the legal profession.
Cebu, Manila, Davao and other centers handle thousands
The regionalized setup spread the massive number of candidates across 15 testing locations.
Among the biggest testing centers were University of San Jose-Recoletos in Cebu City, New Era University in Quezon City, San Beda University in Manila, Ateneo de Davao University and Saint Louis University in Baguio.
USJ-R in Cebu recorded 1,326 examinees on Day 1, the highest among the testing centers that day.
The 15 testing centers were part of the Supreme Court’s continuing effort to make the Bar more accessible outside Metro Manila while retaining the security and integrity of the national examination.

The Supreme Court had earlier announced that the 2026 Bar would emphasize not only knowledge of the law but also critical thinking, practical application, judgment and responsibility, reflecting the demands of modern legal practice.
The exam also highlighted accessibility
Beyond the record numbers, the 2026 Bar Exams drew attention for efforts to accommodate examinees facing physical and technological challenges.
The Supreme Court said some candidates who faced difficulties with the digital format were allowed to take the examinations by hand.
Four examinees were also permitted to take the tests with the assistance of encoders, including candidates with significant disabilities affecting their ability to type.
The Court also disclosed that a person deprived of liberty was allowed to take the Bar at a local testing center rather than inside a detention facility, subject to security protocols coordinated with the Office of the Judiciary Marshals.
What happens now?
For the thousands who have spent years preparing for the Bar, the next challenge is no longer answering legal questions—it is waiting for the results.
Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel H. Gaerlan, chairperson of the 2026 Bar Examinations, said the results are tentatively scheduled for early January 2027. The timing is intended to allow examinees and their families to get through the Christmas holidays before the announcement.
That means the record-setting 12,010 finishers will now face another test of patience as they wait to learn who will officially earn the title of attorney.
The Supreme Court has yet to announce the final list of successful examinees and topnotchers. Until then, the 2026 Bar story remains unfinished.
The questions have been answered. The papers have been submitted. Now comes the verdict that thousands have been waiting years to see.
