MANILA, Philippines — Zavier Lucero is ready to embrace a bigger role as Gilas Pilipinas prepares for a difficult Asian Games title defense, with the Magnolia forward expected to bring his physical defense, rebounding and versatility to a revamped Philippine lineup.
Lucero is among the 12 players selected for Gilas Pilipinas’ men’s basketball team for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, putting the Magnolia Hotshots forward in line for his first major appearance with the national team.
The 6-foot-6 Lucero has emerged as one of the more intriguing frontcourt options in the PBA, particularly because of his ability to defend multiple positions and battle for rebounds. His defensive impact was also evident during Magnolia’s Governors’ Cup campaign, where he ranked among the league’s better players in defensive rating and total rebounding percentage.
That skill set could become particularly valuable for Gilas.
Lucero’s defense could be a key piece
Gilas head coach Tim Cone is putting together a team that will look considerably different from the squads that competed in recent FIBA windows.
With several overseas-based Filipino players unavailable because of their club commitments, Cone is relying largely on PBA players for the Asian Games. Lucero is part of that new-look group alongside Robert Bolick, RJ Abarrientos, Adrian Nocum, Justine Baltazar, Justin Arana, Sedrick Barefield, Brandon Bates, Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, Jerrick Ahanmisi and Don Trollano. Naturalized player Justin Brownlee is also included in the lineup, subject to his recovery and availability.
The roster gives Cone a different type of team—one built around athleticism, versatility and pace.
That could allow Lucero to play an important role as a mobile forward who can defend bigger players while also switching onto smaller opponents.
His value is not limited to defense, either.
Lucero has shown that he can contribute offensively when given opportunities. He scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Magnolia’s 88-73 victory over Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Governors’ Cup, while also recording two steals and a block.
A first chance to wear the Gilas jersey
Lucero previously came close to joining the national team program.
According to Tiebreaker Times, he was initially included in the pool for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, but his inclusion was later affected while his eligibility was being verified. His inclusion in the Asian Games pool therefore represents another opportunity to finally establish himself as part of Gilas.
In August, Lucero expressed his desire to turn his inclusion in the preliminary pool into a spot on the final roster.
That opportunity has now arrived.
Gilas faces a different challenge in Japan
The Philippines enters the Asian Games as the defending men’s basketball champion after ending a 61-year gold-medal drought at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
Gilas stunned host China in the semifinals before defeating Jordan in the championship game to claim the gold. The victory immediately placed the Philippines under greater pressure heading into its next Asian Games campaign.
This time, however, the Philippines will have a substantially different lineup.
Gilas has been drawn into Group C with China, Bahrain and Kazakhstan, with the Philippines scheduled to open its campaign against Bahrain on September 11 before facing Kazakhstan on September 12 and China on September 14.
China, in particular, represents an early measuring stick.
The Philippines shocked the host nation in Hangzhou after overcoming a 20-point deficit in the semifinals. Chris Newsome, who was part of that championship team, has already warned that Gilas should expect China and the other Asian contenders to come after the defending champions.
South Korea tune-ups provide final test
Before heading to Japan, Gilas is using South Korea as its final preparation stop.
The team traveled to South Korea for two tune-up games against the Korean national team in Suwon before proceeding to Japan for the Asian Games. The games are designed to test the chemistry of a relatively new roster before the pressure of the tournament begins.
For Lucero, the matches provide an important opportunity to show exactly what he can bring to the national team.
His ability to defend, rebound and play with physicality could be particularly important for a Gilas squad that will rely heavily on PBA players and a faster style of play.
Can Lucero become Gilas’ defensive difference-maker?
The Asian Games will be a major test for Lucero—and perhaps the biggest opportunity of his young national-team career.
Gilas does not have the luxury of relying on the same core that delivered the historic gold in 2023. Instead, Cone must build chemistry quickly among new faces while trying to maintain the defensive toughness and competitiveness that have traditionally defined Philippine basketball.
That is where Lucero could make his biggest impact.
If he can consistently defend multiple positions, control the glass and provide timely offense, the Magnolia forward could become one of the unexpected difference-makers in Gilas’ attempt to win back-to-back Asian Games basketball gold medals.
And with China waiting in the group stage, Gilas may find out very quickly just how valuable Lucero’s defensive presence can be.
