Pianist Yunchan Lim is bringing Mozart to the spotlight in Daegu as he launches a major recital journey marking the 270th anniversary of the legendary composer’s birth.
Lim is scheduled to perform at Suseong Artpia in Daegu on Oct. 5, presenting an all-Mozart program built around four piano sonatas and a fantasy. The recital is part of a broader project that will take the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition winner to major concert halls around the world.
The Daegu program features Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 1 in C major, K. 279; Piano Sonata No. 6 in D major, K. 284; Fantasy in D minor, K. 397; Piano Sonata No. 12 in F major, K. 332; and Piano Sonata No. 8 in A minor, K. 310.
The performance marks the opening chapter of what has been described as Lim’s “Mozart pilgrimage,” with the pianist scheduled to continue the program at venues in Korea and overseas.
His international itinerary includes performances at Wigmore Hall in London, Berliner Philharmonie and Carnegie Hall, where the same Mozart program is scheduled later in October.
Lim rose to international prominence after becoming the youngest winner in the history of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022, launching a rapidly expanding career on major stages.
The Mozart project gives audiences a chance to hear Lim explore a composer whose music demands both precision and expressive control. Rather than focusing on a single celebrated work, the recital presents a sequence of sonatas alongside the Fantasy in D minor, offering a broader view of Mozart’s keyboard writing.
The Daegu recital is also the beginning of a much larger musical journey. With performances planned across Europe and the United States, Lim is set to carry his Mozart interpretation far beyond Korea.
And as the first notes sound in Daegu, the question now shifts from how Lim will open the Mozart journey — to where this ambitious musical pilgrimage will ultimately lead.
