A teacher’s offhand observation that she should become a singer helped set Gail Belmonte on a path that would eventually see her emerge as one of Singapore’s promising homegrown R&B voices.
The Filipina-Singaporean singer-songwriter, who was born and raised in Singapore, has been performing since she was young. Her music blends R&B, soul and pop, with a warm vocal style that has become central to her artistic identity.
But Belmonte’s musical journey was not simply the result of childhood ambition. That early encouragement from a teacher gave her a moment of recognition that singing could become more than something she enjoyed — it could potentially become her future.
Her talent eventually took her beyond school performances and into Singapore’s competitive music scene. As a teenager, Belmonte represented Singapore on television singing competitions, including The Final 1, where she was among the contestants who made it into the later stages of the competition. She was also recognised for her vocal ability during the show.

She co-wrote the original song For Singapore with Dominic Chin and RINES for the Music & Drama Company’s Celebrating Singapore: Volume 2. The album also featured an alternate R&B version of the 2024 National Day song Here We Are.
That work reflects how far Belmonte has moved from being a young singer whose potential was spotted by a teacher. She is now contributing not just her voice but also her songwriting skills to Singapore’s music scene.
Her latest work continues that progression. In 2026, Belmonte released new music while building her profile as an R&B and soul artist, with her style described as combining warmth, sincerity and an effortless vocal delivery.
She is also set to perform at Homegrown 2026, placing her among a new generation of Singapore musicians being showcased alongside more established local acts.
For Belmonte, the journey illustrates how a seemingly simple comment can sometimes stay with a young person for years.
