A man was allegedly caught on CCTV stealing a staff member’s mobile phone from a durian stall in Yishun, even after appearing to notice the security camera twice.
The incident happened at Durian Lah’s outlet at Block 744 Yishun Street 72 at about 6.13pm on Sept. 22. The stall later shared CCTV footage of the incident and appealed to the man to return the phone.
In the footage, the man can be seen standing near a table while smoking a cigarette. He appears to look toward the CCTV camera before positioning himself beside the table, where two phones had reportedly been left unattended.
He then appears to glance at the camera a second time before turning away. Moments later, he allegedly reaches for one of the phones, puts it into his pocket and walks out of the stall.
The staff member reportedly discovered that his phone was missing after returning from a toilet break. The stall said it initially gave the man an opportunity to return the device before involving the authorities.
The appeal was posted on the stall’s social-media page, asking the person to return the phone and warning that CCTV footage and other evidence would be provided to the police if it was not returned.
A police report was subsequently lodged on Sept. 22. Police confirmed that a report had been made and that investigations are ongoing.
The incident has drawn attention because the alleged theft appears to have taken place in full view of the stall’s surveillance camera. The footage also shows the man seemingly checking the camera before allegedly taking the phone.
The case remains under police investigation, and the man seen in the footage has not been publicly identified or charged.
