Xi Calls for Economic Growth, Repeats Warning Against Taiwan Independence

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for efforts to meet China’s full-year economic targets while reiterating Beijing’s opposition to Taiwan independence during a National Day reception in Beijing on September 30.

Speaking at the event marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Xi said the country’s economy had continued to withstand pressure and demonstrated “strong resilience and vitality.” He urged officials to maintain stability, promote economic development and improve people’s well-being while working to accomplish the year’s targets.

Xi also emphasized Beijing’s position on Taiwan, calling for deeper exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait while urging action against forces advocating Taiwan independence and opposing what China describes as external interference.

He said China should promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and advance what Beijing calls the cause of national reunification.

The remarks came days after Xi met US President Donald Trump in Washington, where Taiwan was among the sensitive issues discussed between the two leaders. The summit also produced an extension of the existing US-China trade truce, leaving major disagreements between the two countries unresolved.

Xi’s National Day address also stressed continued reform, development and stability as China moves forward with its 2026–2030 Five-Year Plan. His comments placed economic performance and Taiwan among the major priorities highlighted during the annual state reception.
