Who Is the Man Found Dead Near a Quezon River? Authorities Race to Identify Him

GUMACA, Quezon — Authorities are working to identify an unidentified man found dead near a river in Gumaca, Quezon, on Monday morning, August 24, as questions remain over how he ended up at the scene.

Personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) recovered the man’s body near the Pipisik River, in the vicinity of the Peñafrancia-Tañada Bridge in Barangay Peñafrancia, according to the Coast Guard-Southern Tagalog.

The victim was estimated to be around 40 years old and approximately 5 feet and 4 inches tall. Authorities said he was wearing white shorts with black and red stripes and was not wearing a shirt when he was found.

In an initial examination, the Coast Guard said no visible wounds or external injuries were observed. However, authorities have not yet publicly determined the cause of death, and the absence of visible injuries does not by itself establish how the man died.

The body was taken to a local funeral service facility for safekeeping while authorities coordinate efforts to establish the man’s identity and locate his relatives.

Authorities Continue Efforts to Identify the Victim

The case remains under investigation, with the Coast Guard coordinating with concerned authorities to ensure the proper identification and turnover of the man’s remains to his family.

Another report published Monday also identified the recovery site as the river area near the Peñafrancia-Tañada Bridge, providing additional confirmation of the location. As of the latest reports, however, authorities have not released the man’s name or announced a final determination on the circumstances surrounding his death.

The discovery comes as river-related incidents have recently drawn attention in Quezon and other parts of Southern Luzon. In a separate incident last week, a 47-year-old man died after being swept away by strong river currents in Sariaya, Quezon, highlighting the dangers that waterways can pose during periods of heavy rain. That case, however, is separate and unrelated to the Gumaca discovery.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation as efforts continue to establish the facts surrounding the latest incident.
