Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan is in Qatar for a two-day working visit from September 16 to 17, where he will co-chair a bilateral meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
Balakrishnan will co-chair the third Qatar-Singapore Implementation Monitoring Mechanism with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi.
The mechanism provides a platform for Singapore and Qatar to review progress on bilateral initiatives and identify areas where cooperation can be expanded.
Discussions cover a range of areas, including information and communications technology, security, business, legal affairs and sustainability.
The mechanism was established under the Qatar-Singapore High Level Joint Committee following Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s state visit to Singapore in 2017.
During the latest meeting, the two sides are expected to review developments in their existing areas of cooperation while exploring new opportunities to deepen bilateral ties.
Balakrishnan will also meet senior Qatari leaders and officials during his visit. Their discussions are expected to include regional and international developments.
The visit comes as Singapore and Qatar continue to strengthen ties across trade, investment, security and other areas. Both countries have maintained regular high-level exchanges as they expand cooperation between Southeast Asia and the Gulf.
Balakrishnan is accompanied by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim and officials from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two-day visit provides an opportunity for both sides to assess ongoing initiatives and discuss further areas of cooperation as Singapore and Qatar continue developing their bilateral relationship.
