UOBAM Targets US$1 Billion in Dollar Funds as Thai Demand for Global Investments Surges

BANGKOK — UOB Asset Management Thailand is targeting US$1 billion in assets under management for its US dollar-denominated funds, betting on growing demand from Thai investors seeking international diversification, income opportunities and exposure to global markets.

The ambitious target comes after UOBAM Thailand rapidly expanded its position in Thailand’s dollar fund market. The company had already built a leading position in the segment, with its US dollar fund assets reaching US$436 million by April 2026 and its market share rising to approximately 72%, according to recent industry information.

Why Are Thai Investors Moving Into Dollar Funds?

Thai investors are increasingly looking beyond domestic investments.

Dollar-denominated funds offer exposure to international assets while allowing investors to diversify across different markets, currencies and asset classes.

Demand is being driven by several factors, including:

  • Access to global investment opportunities
  • Currency diversification
  • Higher income potential
  • Greater portfolio flexibility
  • Exposure to international bonds and equities
  • Demand for highly liquid investments

UOBAM Thailand has been expanding its range of dollar-denominated products across multiple asset classes to serve both retail and institutional investors.

The company’s strategy is simple: give Thai investors more ways to invest globally without limiting them to baht-denominated products.

Rapid Growth in Just Over a Year

UOBAM Thailand’s growth in the dollar fund market has been particularly rapid.

The company began introducing its US dollar fund products in March 2025, starting with approximately US$23.77 million in assets.

By July 2025, its dollar fund assets had climbed to US$251 million.

The total increased further to US$418 million by December 2025, before reaching US$436 million by April 2026.

That rapid expansion helped establish UOBAM Thailand as a major player in the country’s growing market for dollar-denominated investment products.

The Road to US$1 Billion

Reaching US$1 billion would require UOBAM Thailand to more than double its April asset base.

But the company appears to be betting that demand for international investments will continue to grow.

Investors across Asia have increasingly sought overseas exposure as they look to reduce dependence on their home markets and spread investment risks across different economies.

The broader UOB Group has also reported strong momentum in wealth management across Southeast Asia, with wealth management income in its ASEAN markets rising 30% year on year in the first half of 2026, led partly by growth in Thailand and Malaysia.

More Than Just US Investments

A dollar fund does not necessarily mean an investment limited to the United States.

Dollar-denominated funds can provide access to a broad range of international investments, including:

  • US government bonds
  • Global bonds
  • International equities
  • Money market instruments
  • Multi-asset portfolios
  • Other overseas securities

This gives investors the opportunity to use the US dollar as an investment currency while gaining exposure to markets around the world.

UOB Thailand’s current investment materials also show a range of dollar-denominated funds, including products focused on government bonds and fixed-income investments.

A Major Change Is Also Coming for UOBAM

UOBAM Thailand’s expansion is taking place during a significant transition for its parent organisation.

In August, UOB Group announced an agreement for Allianz Global Investors to acquire UOB Asset Management across eight Asian markets, including Thailand.

The transaction covers UOBAM operations in Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

UOB said the business had approximately S$42 billion in assets under management as of December 31, 2025. Operations are expected to continue normally during the transition, while the transaction remains subject to regulatory approval.

The deal is expected to strengthen Allianz Global Investors’ presence in Asia while UOB shifts its focus further toward wealth advisory and investment distribution.

What It Means for Thai Investors

The growing popularity of dollar funds reflects a broader change in how Thai investors are building their portfolios.

Instead of concentrating primarily on domestic stocks, bonds and deposits, more investors are looking internationally for:

Growth. Income. Diversification.

However, overseas investments also come with additional risks.

Investors in dollar funds can be affected by:

  • Exchange-rate movements
  • Changes in US interest rates
  • Global market volatility
  • Bond price fluctuations
  • Geopolitical developments

A stronger or weaker baht can also significantly affect returns when investments are converted back into Thailand’s currency.

The Bottom Line

UOB Asset Management Thailand is targeting US$1 billion in dollar-denominated fund assets as demand grows for global diversification and international investment opportunities.

The company has already expanded its dollar fund assets from less than US$24 million in March 2025 to US$436 million by April 2026, highlighting how quickly investor interest in overseas products has grown.

With Thai investors increasingly looking beyond their domestic market, the race to capture demand for international investment products is intensifying.

For UOBAM Thailand, reaching US$1 billion would mark its next major milestone — and another sign that Thai investors are increasingly taking their money global.
