UK Police Admit They Never Shared 2019 Allegations About Meghan Markle’s Father With Other Agencies — But Did a Critical Warning Go Unanswered for Seven Years?

LONDON, October 25, 2026 — A controversy involving Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr., has taken a new turn after Britain’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that a letter containing allegations of possible criminal wrongdoing was received in 2019 but was never shared with other law enforcement agencies.

The revelation has raised questions about how British authorities handled the information, particularly as police in the Philippines investigate separate allegations involving child sexual abuse material reportedly discovered at Markle’s former residence.

The Metropolitan Police have announced a review of their handling of the 2019 correspondence and are considering whether to refer the matter to Britain’s independent police watchdog.

However, no finding of criminal wrongdoing has been established against Thomas Markle Sr., who has strongly denied the accusations.

UK Police Confirm Receiving Allegations in 2019

According to the Metropolitan Police, officers received a letter in January 2019 containing allegations relating to possible offenses outside the United Kingdom.

The correspondence was directed to the force’s Protection Command because of concerns involving the security of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

After examining the letter, officers decided to forward it to the office of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

But the police acknowledged that the allegations were not passed on to other law enforcement authorities.

The admission has brought renewed attention to the handling of potentially serious information involving allegations of offenses abroad.

Scotland Yard is now reviewing whether its earlier response was appropriate and whether a referral should be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

That review does not itself establish that police misconduct occurred.

Meghan Markle Says She Was Deeply Distressed

The controversy intensified after Meghan Markle publicly expressed distress over reports involving her father.

According to media reports, Meghan said she had become aware of disturbing allegations about Thomas Markle Sr. years earlier.

She also indicated that concerns about her family’s safety had contributed to her decision to prevent contact between her father and her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Meghan said she believed the allegations had been under investigation after receiving assurances about the matter.

However, Channel NewsAsia, citing AFP, reported that a source close to the situation said police were not investigating the matter at that time.

The apparent difference between Meghan’s understanding and the reported police response has added another unresolved question to an already sensitive case.

Philippines Investigates Allegations Linked to Former Cebu Home

The case has also drawn attention in the Philippines, where authorities are examining allegations that child sexual abuse material was found among belongings at Thomas Markle Sr.’s former home.

British newspapers, including The Sun and Daily Mail, reported that the material was allegedly discovered during the clearing of the property.

Associated Press separately reported that Meghan’s brother, Thomas Markle Jr., said he had discovered suspected abusive images while clearing their father’s former home in Cebu.

These remain allegations. The reported material and the circumstances surrounding its discovery have not been established through a publicly reported court finding.

A Cebu police officer confirmed to AFP that an investigation was ongoing.

The allegations have created a cross-border dimension to the case because the suspected material was reportedly discovered in the Philippines, while earlier information had reached British authorities.

FBI Aware of Allegations as International Scrutiny Grows

US federal authorities have also acknowledged awareness of the case.

An FBI spokesperson said the bureau knew about the allegations and was prepared to provide appropriate support to Philippine authorities.

The involvement of law enforcement agencies across different jurisdictions could become important as investigators seek to establish the facts.

Among the questions are whether the reported material can be independently verified, who possessed or controlled it, and whether any criminal offenses occurred.

An investigation, however, must not be confused with a determination of guilt.

Thomas Markle Sr. Rejects Accusations

Thomas Markle Sr., 82, has denied the allegations.

The Daily Mail quoted him describing the accusations as “sick lies.”

His denial is particularly important given the seriousness of the claims and the widespread attention surrounding his relationship with Meghan Markle and the British royal family.

There has been no publicly confirmed conviction or judicial determination establishing his involvement in the alleged offenses described in these reports.

Markle, a former television lighting director, has been estranged from Meghan for several years.

He did not attend her wedding to Prince Harry at Windsor Castle in May 2018, an absence that attracted extensive international attention.

Seven-Year Gap Raises Questions Over Police Procedures

The Metropolitan Police’s acknowledgment has shifted part of the public discussion away from the royal family’s personal disputes and toward how law enforcement agencies respond to potentially serious cross-border allegations.

The central issue is whether information received in 2019 should have been communicated to another authority and whether existing procedures were followed.

British police have confirmed that the letter’s allegations were not shared with other law enforcement agencies, but this alone does not demonstrate that investigators ignored a confirmed crime or that a criminal offense could have been prevented.

The police review may help explain why the original letter was handled as it was.

For the Philippines, investigators face the separate responsibility of determining whether credible evidence supports the allegations connected to Markle’s former residence.

What Happens Next?

The controversy now involves three significant developments: an investigation in the Philippines, the FBI’s stated willingness to assist Philippine authorities, and a British police review of the 2019 correspondence.

Any further conclusions will depend on verified evidence, official investigative findings and potential decisions by prosecutors or independent oversight authorities.

For Meghan Markle, the allegations have reopened a deeply personal family dispute under intense international scrutiny.

For law enforcement, the larger question concerns communication between agencies when serious allegations potentially cross international borders.

With Scotland Yard reviewing its past actions and Philippine authorities investigating the reported discovery, the unanswered question is whether the original warnings were handled appropriately — and what investigators will ultimately establish.
