CHONBURI, Thailand — A Thai police officer accused of fatally shooting his wife inside the kindergarten where she worked surrendered after an intense 18-hour overnight standoff, ending a dramatic siege that has renewed concerns over gun violence and school safety in Thailand.
The suspect, Tatsapong Tongthat, an officer attached to Bang Lamung Police Station, allegedly shot and killed his wife, a teacher, inside Nongplalai Municipal Kindergarten in Chonburi province on September 9.
All 44 children at the school were safely evacuated, along with other teachers, and no students were physically injured.
After the shooting, the suspect fled to his home, where police surrounded the property and launched lengthy negotiations in an effort to secure his peaceful surrender.
Son’s Emotional Pleas Help End All-Night Standoff
The siege stretched through the night as police maintained a heavy presence around the house.
The suspect’s son, who is also a police officer according to local reports, travelled to the scene and spent hours trying to convince his father to surrender. He reportedly pleaded with him through telephone calls and loudspeaker messages.
The suspect eventually emerged from the house at around 6:20am on September 10 and surrendered to authorities, ending the nearly 18-hour standoff without further violence.
Police then took him into custody for questioning as investigators continued gathering evidence.
Teacher Killed Inside Her Own School
The shooting took place late Wednesday morning inside Nongplalai Municipal Kindergarten, around 150 kilometres southeast of Bangkok.
Authorities said the victim was the suspect’s wife and worked as a teacher at the school.
The killing immediately triggered an emergency response, with authorities evacuating all children and staff members from the premises.
Officials later suspended classes as a precaution and arranged support for students and school personnel affected by the traumatic incident.
Police Investigate Motive
Authorities have not publicly established a final motive for the shooting.
Investigators are continuing to examine the events leading up to the killing and gather forensic and other evidence as the legal investigation moves forward.
Because the suspect is a serving police officer, the case has also drawn heightened public attention and raised questions about firearm access, accountability and the handling of domestic disputes involving armed law enforcement personnel.
The suspect remains innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Thailand’s School Safety Debate Intensifies
The Chonburi tragedy comes during a period of growing concern over shootings involving schools in Thailand.
In August, a teenage gunman carried out a deadly shooting involving a school and family members, killing eight people and injuring more than 20 before his death, according to recent reports.
Earlier this month, another 14-year-old was detained after firing shots at a school in Kamphaeng Phet, although no one was seriously injured in that incident.
The latest cases have intensified calls for stronger action on firearms and school security.
Thailand’s government has moved to review gun regulations, including suspending the issuance of new firearm purchase permits while authorities reassess existing licensing and ownership rules.
