Four Mangrove Species Documented on Lawak Island—And Scientists Are Still Looking Closely

A remote Philippine island in the West Philippine Sea has yielded an unexpected ecological discovery: four mangrove species have been documented around the Lawak Island Critical Habitat, prompting further scientific verification and strengthening calls to protect the area’s fragile ecosystem.

The discovery was reported by the Philippine Information Agency on August 14, citing the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), which said it is continuing to examine the mangrove trees and obtain expert confirmation of the species identified during field work.

Rather than being simply another environmental finding, the discovery could provide important clues about how mangroves naturally reach, establish themselves and regenerate on an isolated island in the West Philippine Sea.

Scientists are checking what is growing there

According to PCSD, field teams documented mangrove trees and sent photographs and other documentation to mangrove specialists for additional verification. The survey also found mangrove propagules—young plant material capable of developing into new mangrove plants—that had washed ashore.

That distinction is important.

The current finding should not be interpreted as a fully completed species inventory. PCSD is still seeking expert confirmation, meaning the documentation represents an important scientific baseline rather than the final word on Lawak Island’s mangrove biodiversity.

Researchers recorded measurements including tree diameter at breast height, circumference, merchantable height and total height. These measurements can help establish baseline information for future monitoring and management of the island’s mangrove stand.

Why mangroves matter on a tiny island

The significance goes beyond the trees themselves.

PCSD said the presence of the mangroves suggests that Lawak Island has natural potential for mangrove dispersal, recruitment, regeneration and possible expansion. The vegetation could contribute to wildlife habitat, shoreline protection, climate resilience and the island’s broader ecological stability.

For a small, isolated island exposed to waves, storms and changing coastal conditions, mangrove growth can be especially valuable.

The discovery also raises an intriguing scientific question: How did these mangroves establish themselves in such a remote part of the West Philippine Sea, and could naturally arriving propagules allow the mangrove stand to expand over time?

That is one reason continued monitoring will be crucial.

Lawak has been protected as a critical habitat since 2022

The mangrove discovery comes several years after Lawak Island was formally placed under stronger environmental protection.

The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development declared Lawak Island a critical habitat in September 2022 through PCSD Resolution No. 22-827, pursuant to the Philippines’ wildlife protection framework. The Municipality of Kalayaan subsequently adopted the declaration.

The designation recognizes Lawak as an important habitat for wildlife, particularly migratory birds. PIA reported that the island was serving as a sanctuary for approximately 4,300 migratory birds as of 2022.

The protection framework was followed by efforts to develop a dedicated management plan.

PCSD conducted a management-planning workshop in 2023 with the Municipality of Kalayaan, Western Command, Western Philippines University, the provincial government and other agencies and institutions, with support from the USAID-SIBOL project.

The resulting Lawak Island Critical Habitat Management Plan calls for measures including protection of threatened bird populations, climate-resilient facilities, sustainable tourism, stronger ecological research, enforcement and public awareness. The plan’s estimated five-year implementation cost was placed at about P121.1 million.

The discovery adds another layer to Lawak’s environmental importance

The latest finding effectively expands the conservation story around Lawak.

The island is not only important because of its bird population. Its coastal vegetation, marine environment and other biological resources form part of a larger ecosystem that requires long-term scientific monitoring.

The PCSD says the latest research is supported through the Marine Resources Initiative Project, funded by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with scientific collaboration and technical guidance from Geoscience Australia and the University of Sydney.

That international scientific cooperation could become increasingly important as researchers build a more complete picture of Lawak’s biodiversity.

A conservation story unfolding in the West Philippine Sea

Lawak Island is located roughly 300 kilometers from mainland Palawan and is one of the Philippine-administered features in the West Philippine Sea.

Its environmental significance has also been recognized by Philippine authorities beyond the latest mangrove survey.

The Philippine News Agency previously reported that the declaration of Lawak as a critical habitat was intended to strengthen conservation of its wildlife and ecosystems. The island’s protected status was described by Palawan officials as an important step toward both environmental protection and responsible management of the territory.

But the latest discovery also comes with a warning: finding mangroves is only the beginning.

Scientists still need to determine the exact species, monitor whether the plants survive and reproduce, establish how extensive the mangrove stand is, and understand how environmental conditions are affecting its growth.

If the mangroves continue to regenerate naturally, Lawak could offer researchers a rare opportunity to study how coastal vegetation establishes and develops on an isolated island ecosystem in the West Philippine Sea.

For now, four mangrove species have been documented—but the bigger story may be what scientists discover when they return.
