SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to deliver his National Day Rally speech on Aug 23, with Singaporeans watching closely for details on how the Government plans to ease the growing pressures faced by families.
Mr Wong will deliver his third National Day Rally as Prime Minister at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Headquarters in Ang Mo Kio, with the speech beginning at 6.45pm.
He will speak first in Malay, followed by Mandarin, before delivering his English speech at 8pm, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The rally is expected to be closely watched because Mr Wong has already signalled that the Government is undertaking a major review of how it supports Singaporean families throughout their lives.
In his National Day Message on Aug 8, Mr Wong said family life has become more challenging as households juggle competing demands and rising expectations. He highlighted issues including the cost of raising children, access to affordable infant care and childcare, and ways to reduce the overall burden on families.
Families could be at the heart of this year’s rally
One of the biggest questions surrounding the 2026 National Day Rally is how far the Government will go in translating that review into concrete measures.
The pressures facing families are not limited to the price of having children. Concerns also include the time needed to care for young children, childcare arrangements, housing and the challenge of balancing work and family responsibilities.
Recent comments from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah also pointed to several major concerns raised by Singaporean couples, including the cost of raising children, spending time with family, caregiving arrangements and housing.
That has heightened expectations that Mr Wong could use the rally to outline the next phase of Singapore’s family-support policies.
However, the specific measures have not yet been announced, and it would be premature to assume that any particular cash payout, subsidy or benefit will be introduced.
Why this National Day Rally matters
The National Day Rally is traditionally one of Singapore’s most closely watched political speeches of the year, providing the Prime Minister with an opportunity to address major national challenges and set out the Government’s policy direction.
For Mr Wong, the 2026 rally comes at an important point in his premiership. It will be his third National Day Rally as Prime Minister, following his 2024 and 2025 rallies.
The 2025 rally focused heavily on Singapore’s ability to navigate global uncertainty, employment, artificial intelligence, social resilience and long-term national development. This year, attention is turning strongly towards the pressures affecting everyday family life.
When and where to watch PM Wong’s speech
The 2026 National Day Rally will be broadcast across Singapore’s television and radio platforms.
The English broadcast will be available on Channel 5, CNA and CNA938, while Mandarin broadcasts will be carried on Channel 8, Channel U and Capital 95.8FM. Malay broadcasts will be available on Suria and Warna 94.2FM.
The Tamil broadcast will be carried on Vasantham and Oli 96.8FM.
The rally will also be livestreamed through the Prime Minister’s Office and Mr Wong’s YouTube channels. Those who miss the live event will be able to watch the speech through the PMO’s platforms from Aug 24.
The big question for Aug 23
For Singaporeans, the biggest question is no longer whether family support will feature prominently in the rally — the Government has already indicated that it will.
The real question is what the Government will actually announce.
Will there be new measures to make raising children more affordable? Will childcare support be expanded? Could housing, caregiving and work-life pressures receive fresh attention?
Those answers are expected to become clearer when Mr Wong takes the stage on Aug 23.
For millions of Singaporeans, the headline may not simply be what the Prime Minister says — but what changes after he says it.
