GUMACA, Quezon — A 65-year-old woman who was being rushed to a hospital after suffering a stroke died after the tricycle carrying her collided with a truck along the Maharlika Highway in Gumaca, Quezon, on Sunday, August 30.
The fatal crash happened at around 10:15 a.m. in Barangay Villa Bota, according to a report from the Quezon police cited by the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Police said the tricycle was carrying four passengers, including the elderly woman, when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The tricycle crossed into the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming truck.
The woman was reportedly being transported to a hospital because she had suffered a stroke before the road crash.
The tricycle driver and the passengers were taken to the Quezon Provincial Network Hospital following the collision. Despite efforts to treat her, the 65-year-old victim died while undergoing treatment.
Another report identified the victim as Maribela Alvarez y Dastas, 65, and reported that three other passengers were injured. It said the tricycle was being driven toward a hospital when the accident occurred.
The truck involved was reportedly a Hino wing-van carrying Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) relief goods bound for Bicol. The vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction when the collision occurred, according to the report.
Police probe underway
Authorities are continuing to investigate what caused the tricycle to lose control and cross into the truck’s lane.
At this stage, police have not released a final determination of liability. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by motorists and passengers along major highways, where even a sudden loss of vehicle control can quickly turn an emergency trip into a fatal collision.
For now, authorities are expected to establish the precise sequence of events leading to the crash, including what caused the tricycle to veer into the opposing lane.
