BANGKOK, Thailand — What was supposed to be an emotional farewell to two of Thailand’s most celebrated rock musicians was abruptly thrown into chaos after a temporary elevated seating structure partially collapsed during the opening night of the Asanee-Wasan farewell concert at IMPACT Arena.
The incident forced organizers to halt the September 2 performance and reschedule the affected show, turning what was meant to be the beginning of a six-show farewell run into an unexpected safety crisis.
The concert features legendary Thai rock brothers Asanee and Wasan Chotikul, popularly known as Asanee-Wasan, who have spent more than four decades performing together.
Temporary VIP seating structure began to sink
According to Thai media reports, thousands of concertgoers were already inside IMPACT Arena in Muang Thong Thani when problems developed in a temporary elevated seating section on the first floor.
The affected area was part of the VIP seating arrangement installed specifically for the concert. Reports said the structure initially began sinking on one side before the problem spread across the section, prompting staff to clear people from the area.
The situation delayed the start of the performance.
A timeline published by Thai PBS, based on an account from one of the concert attendees, said audiences began entering around 6:30 p.m. The scheduled 7 p.m. start was delayed, with an announcement around 8 p.m. saying there was a problem involving the floor. The concert eventually began at approximately 8:15 p.m.
But the problems did not end there.
Concert eventually stopped
As the performance continued, concertgoers were reportedly instructed to leave the elevated seating area for safety.
By around 9:40 p.m., the show was temporarily halted while people were cleared from the affected section. Thai PBS reported that hundreds of spectators began leaving amid frustration over the situation and the lack of clear communication.
The concert was eventually terminated, with the organizer announcing that the September 2 performance would be rescheduled.
Reports also described fans in other areas of the arena being affected because the seating problem disrupted the overall concert environment.
Some attendees had traveled from outside Bangkok, adding to concerns about transportation, accommodation and other costs associated with the canceled performance.
IMPACT Arena says the main floor was not damaged
IMPACT Arena subsequently clarified that the structure involved was a temporary elevated seating installation specifically added for the concert.
The venue said the incident was confined to that temporary structure and did not damage the arena’s main floor.
According to IMPACT Arena, the permanent floor remained intact and can support loads of up to 2 tons per square meter. The venue said its staff and the organizer immediately inspected and addressed the affected area.
The venue also said it would work with the organizer and other parties to investigate what happened and review safety procedures.
Organizer promises new structure and compensation
Neekrung Connect, the concert organizer, later issued a second statement accepting responsibility for the incident and outlining measures for affected ticket holders.
The organizer said the original elevated structure was dismantled and that a completely new elevated structure was installed rather than merely repairing the affected portion.
The new installation was inspected under the supervision of engineers from Pak Kret Municipality, IMPACT Arena and Live Nation, according to the organizer’s statement reported by Thai PBS and Thairath.
The organizer said the remaining September performances were cleared to proceed following the safety inspections.
What happens to September 2 ticket holders?
The canceled September 2 performance has been rescheduled for September 9, 2026, as the final farewell performance.
Ticket holders from the September 2 show can use their original tickets for the rescheduled performance, according to the organizer.
Those unable to attend the September 9 show can request refunds through Thai Ticket Major branches, with the organizer’s latest statement saying refund requests would be accepted through September 6.
The organizer said tickets returned through the refund process would subsequently be made available for sale again.
There is a minor discrepancy among early reports over the rescheduled show’s starting time, with some initial reports citing 6 p.m. The latest organizer statement reported by Thairath gives 7 p.m. as the September 9 start time.
A farewell decades in the making
The disruption is particularly significant because Asanee-Wasan’s farewell concert was designed to mark the end of a musical journey spanning more than 40 years.
The brothers rose to prominence in Thai rock beginning in the 1980s and produced numerous major hits. Their 2026 farewell series was heavily anticipated, with earlier reports saying the original shows had sold out and an additional September 2 performance was subsequently added.
The planned farewell run includes performances on September 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8, with the September 8 show designated as a charity performance supporting the Ramathibodi Foundation. The affected September 2 performance has now been moved to September 9.
The bigger question: How did a temporary concert structure fail?
The incident has shifted attention away from the music and toward one critical question:
How did a temporary elevated seating structure become unsafe while thousands of people were already inside the venue?
At this stage, authorities and the parties involved have not publicly established a definitive technical cause for the structural failure. Reports describing the structure as having an installation defect or other specific engineering fault should therefore be treated cautiously until a formal investigation establishes what happened.
What is confirmed is that the affected structure was temporary, the main arena floor was not damaged, the September 2 performance was stopped for safety reasons, and organizers subsequently replaced the elevated structure and announced measures for affected fans.
For fans who had waited years for one last chance to see Asanee-Wasan together, the farewell has now become something nobody expected — a concert remembered not only for the music, but for the night the stage-side seating gave way and forced Thailand’s rock legends to stop their final goodbye.
