SAN JUAN CITY, Philippines — Public schools in San Juan City are set to receive a major security boost after the city’s Local School Board approved funding for additional safety and security equipment, strengthening efforts to protect students, teachers and school personnel.
The move comes as school safety has become an increasingly urgent national concern, with education officials, lawmakers and local governments pushing for stronger campus security systems following recent incidents of violence in schools.
The funding approved by San Juan City’s Local School Board is expected to support efforts to improve security in public schools and provide safer learning environments for thousands of students.
School Safety Moves to the Top of the Agenda
The San Juan initiative comes at a critical time for Philippine public schools.
Recent data presented by the Department of Education during a Senate hearing showed that security infrastructure remains uneven across the country. Only around three in 10 public schools nationwide have security guards, while only about four in 10 have closed-circuit television or CCTV systems, according to information reported by INQUIRER.net.
The figures have intensified calls for more investment in school security, including surveillance cameras, security personnel, perimeter protection and emergency-response equipment.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara has also outlined a broader school security strategy that includes investments in CCTV systems, improved lighting, access-control equipment and scanners, particularly as the government works to address shortages in campus security personnel.
Local Governments Seen as Key to Closing Security Gaps
The Department of Education has welcomed the participation of local government units and private partners in strengthening school security, recognizing that national government resources alone may not immediately address the safety needs of every public school in the Philippines.
For San Juan City, the approval of additional funding through its Local School Board could provide another layer of protection for students and school employees while complementing existing education programs supported by the city government.
San Juan has already invested heavily in public education, including digital learning resources, internet connectivity and student support programs.
In June 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the distribution of learning resources to students from 13 public schools in San Juan City, highlighting the cooperation between the national government and the local government in supporting learners.
The San Juan City government has also reported providing tablets to approximately 13,000 public school students, along with classroom and household internet connectivity, Smart TVs and other education-related assistance.
Security Funding Could Add Another Layer of Protection
While technology and learning resources have become a major focus of education investment, security is now emerging as another critical area requiring sustained funding.
National education officials are seeking a dedicated budget line for school safety that could cover security guards, CCTV systems, perimeter fences, metal detectors, crisis preparedness and other protective measures.
The scale of the challenge is significant. Interior and Local Government officials have estimated that billions of pesos could be needed to establish comprehensive CCTV coverage across public schools nationwide, underlining why local initiatives such as San Juan’s funding approval could play an important role in addressing immediate security needs.
