More than a decade after the Mamasapano clash that claimed the lives of 44 elite police commandos, Philippine authorities have reported another development in the long-running pursuit of individuals allegedly connected to one of the country’s most painful security tragedies.
A suspect authorities linked to the 2015 SAF 44 clash was killed during a government operation in Maguindanao del Sur, according to security officials.
The development adds another chapter to the continuing effort to track down individuals accused of involvement in the deadly Mamasapano encounter, a tragedy that remains deeply etched in the country’s history and in the memories of the families left behind.
A Tragedy That Still Resonates
The January 25, 2015 operation, known as Oplan Exodus, was launched to target Malaysian bomb-maker Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan, in Mamasapano. Marwan was killed during the operation, but the mission ended in a devastating firefight that left 44 members of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force dead.
The clash involved armed groups in the area and became one of the deadliest single losses suffered by Philippine police forces in recent history. The incident also triggered investigations, political controversy and renewed scrutiny of coordination between government security forces and armed groups operating in Mindanao.
More than 10 years later, the SAF 44 continues to be commemorated by police units and the families of the fallen commandos, underscoring how deeply the tragedy continues to resonate.
Authorities Continue Pursuit of Suspects
The latest operation is part of a broader pattern of law enforcement and military efforts targeting individuals allegedly linked to the Mamasapano clash and other violent incidents in Maguindanao.
In 2023, authorities also reported the death of a suspected BIFF member whom the military described as a bomb courier and gunman allegedly linked to the killing of SAF personnel. Officials said he was killed after allegedly firing at government forces who were attempting to serve a warrant against him—an account attributed to the military.
More recently, authorities have continued to pursue armed suspects in Maguindanao del Sur in connection with other deadly attacks on police officers. In July 2026, police arrested a former BIFF member whom authorities alleged was linked both to the 2015 Mamasapano clash and to a March 2026 ambush of police personnel in Shariff Aguak. The suspect faced multiple criminal charges and was arrested on the strength of warrants, according to police.
Justice, Accountability and an Unfinished Story
For the families of the fallen SAF 44, every new development carries the weight of a tragedy that has never been forgotten.
The killing of a suspect may close one chapter of a long and complicated investigation, but it does not erase the larger questions surrounding the events of January 2015—or the continuing search for accountability involving those responsible for violence during the clash.
As authorities continue operations against armed groups and wanted suspects in Mindanao, the story of the SAF 44 remains a powerful reminder of the risks faced by security personnel and the lasting human cost of conflict.
