Singaporean actress Rebecca Lim has opened up about the less visible side of motherhood, revealing that life three months after welcoming her second child has not always been easy.
In a candid Instagram post on Sept. 2, the 39-year-old actress spoke about body image, self-acceptance and the pressure many new mothers face to quickly return to their pre-pregnancy appearance.
Lim said she is deeply grateful for her children and the support system around her, but acknowledged that there are days when she struggles with how she looks and feels.
“The pressure to ‘bounce back’ is real,” she wrote, while reminding herself that comparing her journey with others can rob her of the ability to appreciate her own progress.
Her message struck a chord with fans and fellow celebrities, many of whom responded with words of encouragement and support. Actress Vernetta Lopez was among those who reassured Lim that she remains beautiful regardless of whether she has returned to her pre-pregnancy appearance.
“It’s okay if you’re not okay”
Rather than presenting motherhood as a picture-perfect experience, Lim encouraged others to acknowledge difficult emotions instead of hiding them.
She stressed that it is possible to miss the person you were before having children while still learning to appreciate the person you have become.
Her message was particularly personal because of her baby daughter, whom she refers to publicly as “Baby M.”
Lim shared that moments with her daughter help remind her why she needs to learn to accept herself, including on days when she does not feel her best.
She also expressed hope that her daughter will grow up knowing how to love herself, particularly during difficult moments.
A difficult transition from one child to two
Lim and her husband, Matthew Webster, welcomed their second child in May 2026. Their daughter was born weighing 3.6kg following a natural delivery after about 12 hours of labour.
The newborn initially remained in hospital for medical checks and only returned home several days later. Lim chose not to disclose details about her daughter’s medical situation, saying she trusted the doctors and nurses caring for her.
The early days of becoming a family of four were therefore accompanied by both joy and uncertainty.
Lim previously described the transition from raising one child to two as challenging, while also acknowledging the importance of having family and other support around her. Her two-year-old son has also had to adjust to becoming a big brother.
Her second pregnancy was different
The actress has also been candid about how demanding her second pregnancy was.
Unlike her first pregnancy, when she had more time to focus on herself, Lim was simultaneously caring for a toddler. She previously said that the second pregnancy felt significantly more difficult because she could no longer put herself first in the same way.
Her second birth, however, was markedly different from her first.
Lim described her latest delivery as peaceful, in contrast to her first labour, which she had previously described as traumatic. Her first labour lasted about 14 hours and involved complications with her epidural.
The postpartum pressure isn’t new for Rebecca Lim
Lim’s comments also echo concerns she raised after becoming a mother for the first time.
In an earlier CNA interview, she discussed the pressure of returning to the public eye after pregnancy and the unrealistic expectation that women should quickly look like their “old selves.”
She recalled experiencing a painful reaction to a comment about her appearance after she returned to the Star Awards only about two months after giving birth to her son.
At the time, she said she had gained about 20kg during pregnancy and that criticism of her appearance affected her confidence.
Lim argued that placing excessive emphasis on how mothers look immediately after childbirth can create unnecessary stress during an already demanding period of life.
She has also previously acknowledged that losing her postpartum weight after her first pregnancy took considerably longer than she expected, something that contributed to her concerns about going through the process again.
Balancing motherhood and a career in the spotlight
Despite the challenges, Lim has continued working since giving birth.
According to The Straits Times, she returned to public-facing engagements after her confinement period, including appearances connected to luxury fashion brands in June, July and August.
That balancing act adds another layer to her postpartum experience: while adjusting to life with a newborn, she is also navigating the expectations that come with being a prominent actress in the entertainment industry.
Lim’s journey also appears to have changed how she views motherhood compared with her first experience.
When she welcomed her daughter, she spoke about initially worrying whether she would be able to love a second child as deeply as her son. Those fears disappeared after her daughter arrived, as she realised that her capacity for love had grown rather than been divided.
A message that goes beyond celebrity motherhood
Rebecca Lim’s latest post resonates because it is not simply about weight, appearance or returning to work.
It is about the emotional adjustment that comes with becoming a different version of yourself.
For a celebrity whose appearance is inevitably scrutinised, admitting that she sometimes struggles to recognise or accept her postpartum body is particularly revealing.
Her message is ultimately one of self-compassion: mothers do not have to pretend that every day is easy, nor do they have to erase the person they were before motherhood.
Three months into life with her daughter, Lim is still finding her balance — and she is making it clear that there is no single timetable for feeling like yourself again.
And perhaps that is the most important part of her message: sometimes, moving forward does not mean getting your old self back. It means learning to love the new one.
