LOS ANGELES — For millions of viewers, Alan Ritchson is the seemingly indestructible Jack Reacher — the towering former military investigator who rarely appears shaken by anything.
Away from the cameras, however, the 43-year-old actor is entering a far more personal chapter.
Ritchson and his wife Catherine have announced that they are ending their marriage after roughly two decades, confirming a major change in a relationship that began when they were teenagers and eventually produced three sons.
The announcement came in a joint social-media statement on September 12, with the couple saying that although their marriage is ending, they intend to remain closely connected as parents.
They described the life and family they created together as something that would continue to matter to them, stressing that their priority now is raising their children with friendship, respect and stability.
But the announcement may not have been as sudden as it first appeared.
Alan Ritchson had already hinted that his marriage had changed
Nearly two months before the public announcement, Ritchson spoke unusually candidly about his personal life.
In a July 24 interview with Interview Magazine, the actor said his professional ambitions had taken a toll on his personal life and revealed that he and Catherine were no longer moving forward in their relationship in the same way.
More significantly, he said they had learned to co-parent as friends.
At the time, Ritchson stopped short of formally announcing the end of the marriage. But viewed after the September announcement, those remarks now appear to have been an early public indication that the relationship had undergone a major transition.
That timing matters because it suggests the couple’s September statement was not necessarily the beginning of their separation — it was the moment they chose to make it explicit to the public.
Reports say there was an earlier divorce filing
There is another layer to the timeline.
AsiaOne and People report that Ritchson had previously filed for divorce in December 2025, before he and Catherine reconciled several months later in March 2026. AsiaOne, citing legal documents reportedly obtained by the Daily Mail, says irreconcilable differences were cited in that earlier filing.
That means the couple appears to have tried to repair the relationship before ultimately deciding to end the marriage.
Because the newly announced separation and the earlier court filing are not necessarily the same legal proceeding, it is more precise at this stage to say that Ritchson and Catherine have announced the end of their marriage, rather than claim that a divorce has already been finalized.
Neither has publicly provided a detailed explanation for what ultimately caused the relationship to end.
And they have specifically asked outsiders to give the family room to navigate the transition privately.
Their story began long before Hollywood fame
The breakup carries additional weight because Alan and Catherine’s relationship predates his rise to fame.
They first met as teenagers in Florida during ballet classes. Their initial romance ended, but they later reconnected while Catherine was attending college.
They became engaged in 2005 and married in May 2006.
Over the following years, Ritchson built a career that included Smallville, Blue Mountain State, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Titans and Fast X before his role as Jack Reacher transformed him into one of streaming television’s most recognizable action stars.

The couple eventually became parents to three sons and frequently spoke about structuring Ritchson’s demanding acting career around family life.
Just last year, Ritchson publicly celebrated their marriage
That makes one of Ritchson’s previous anniversary messages particularly striking in retrospect.
In May 2025, during the couple’s 19th wedding anniversary, he publicly described building their marriage and family as one of the greatest privileges of his life and praised Catherine for her strength and wisdom.
People notes that unlike previous years, however, there was no comparable public anniversary tribute marking their 20th anniversary in 2026.
On its own, the absence of a social-media post proves little.
Combined with the reported December divorce filing and Ritchson’s revealing July interview, however, it forms part of a clearer timeline showing that the marriage had been under strain well before the couple confirmed the split.
They say their children will remain the priority
One theme runs consistently through the couple’s announcement: their children.
Ritchson and Catherine have three sons, and both stressed that the end of their marriage does not mean the end of their family responsibilities.
Their goal, according to the statement, is to become strong co-parents while allowing one another room to move forward independently.
They also asked for privacy and compassion, particularly because their children are involved.

The timing creates a stark contrast.
On screen, Ritchson is in the middle of another high-profile run as the famously solitary Jack Reacher.
Off screen, he is closing a chapter that began decades before Hollywood made him famous.
The July comment now carries much more weight
Celebrity separation announcements are often written carefully enough that they reveal very little.
In this case, however, Ritchson had already offered a glimpse behind the curtain.
His July admission that his personal life had suffered under the intensity of his professional ambitions — followed by his acknowledgement that he and Catherine had moved toward friendship and co-parenting — now stands out as one of the clearest clues that the couple had already been navigating a separation privately.
Their September announcement simply removed the remaining ambiguity.
After meeting as teenagers, reconnecting years later, marrying in 2006 and raising a family while Ritchson’s Hollywood career accelerated, Alan and Catherine are now choosing separate paths.
But their public message suggests they do not see those paths as completely separate.
For them, the marriage may be ending.
The family, they insist, is not.
