Gerber died on Sept. 20 at a rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles County, according to records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. His death was confirmed by Allie Jenkins, a representative for Crawford and Rande Gerber, who asked the public to respect the family’s privacy during what she described as a difficult and painful time.
The cause of death has not been officially determined. The medical examiner said additional examination and testing were needed, while Santa Monica police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. Reports that have described the death as an overdose should be treated as an investigation finding or report rather than a confirmed final cause of death.
Gerber followed his mother’s path into fashion, beginning his modeling career as a teenager. He worked with major brands including Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana and appeared alongside Cindy Crawford in a 2018 Pepsi Super Bowl commercial. His younger sister, Kaia Gerber, also became a model and actor.
In recent years, Gerber had spoken publicly about his struggles with mental health and substance use. He used his social media platforms to discuss recovery and launched a series called “Mental Health Mondays,” saying he wanted to encourage more open conversations about issues people often keep private.
His family had also spoken about those struggles. In an interview published by Vogue in August, Kaia Gerber discussed the impact her brother’s long-running difficulties had on their family and described how deeply the experience had affected them.
