CINCINNATI, Ohio — Jessica Pegula delivered one of the biggest wins of her season on Saturday, fighting back from a break down in the deciding set to defeat defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 and storm into the final of the Cincinnati Open.
In a gripping contest filled with momentum swings, elite shot-making and a brief rain interruption, the world No. 3 showed remarkable resilience to outlast Swiatek in 2 hours and 47 minutes and end the Polish star’s bid to retain her Cincinnati crown.
Pegula Refuses to Break
The opening set offered an early glimpse of the drama to come.
After the players traded breaks and rain briefly halted play at 1-1, Pegula seized control with a break for a 3-2 lead. Swiatek, however, battled back to level the set before Pegula made her decisive move at 5-5, capitalizing on a double fault to break before closing out the opener.
Swiatek responded like a champion in the second set. The former world No. 1 raised her aggression, moved ahead with a crucial break and eventually leveled the match at one set apiece.

Swiatek surged to a 3-1 lead in the third set, putting Pegula under enormous pressure. Instead of fading, the American fought her way back to 4-4, broke serve again for the decisive advantage and held her nerve to serve out one of the most significant victories of her Cincinnati campaign.

The victory sends Pegula into another WTA 1000 final and provides a major confidence boost as the North American hard-court season reaches its climax.
“It’s a really tough match,” Pegula said after the victory, praising Swiatek’s form and athletic ability while celebrating her return to a WTA 1000 championship match.
The result is particularly notable given the intensity of Pegula’s road to the semifinals. She had already survived a three-set battle against Amanda Anisimova in the previous round, demonstrating the fighting spirit that again proved decisive against Swiatek.
For Swiatek, the loss brings an end to her Cincinnati title defense after another high-profile battle between two of the women’s game’s biggest names. The Pole had entered the semifinal following a quarterfinal victory that was shortened when Elena Rybakina retired injured, but Pegula ultimately proved the tougher obstacle when the pressure peaked.

At the time of the semifinal result, Pegula was set to face the winner of the other women’s semifinal between Coco Gauff and Czech surprise package Sara Bejlek.
