DUPAX DEL NORTE, Nueva Vizcaya — A major hospital expansion is underway in Nueva Vizcaya as the provincial government moves to increase bed capacity and reduce congestion at the Dupax District Hospital (DDH), giving residents of Dupax del Norte and nearby municipalities greater access to hospital care closer to home.
Governor Jose V. Gambito recently led the groundbreaking for a ₱85-million, three-story multipurpose building at DDH, a project funded by the Provincial Government of Nueva Vizcaya.
The expansion comes as the hospital seeks to respond to growing patient demand and improve its ability to accommodate residents, particularly those from rural and neighboring communities who may otherwise need to travel farther for medical services.
66 More Beds in the First Phase
The hospital currently has a 25-bed capacity. Provincial Engineer Jerry Tan said the initial phase will cover the construction of the building’s first and second floors, along with a roof deck.
Once this phase is completed, the hospital is expected to gain 66 additional beds, substantially increasing its capacity to handle patients.
The broader project is planned in three phases. Upon completion of the third phase, DDH is expected to gain 89 additional beds in total.
The increase is significant for a district hospital serving not only Dupax del Norte but also surrounding municipalities. Provincial officials said the project is intended to ease patient congestion and improve the overall delivery of healthcare services.
Hospital Expansion Goes Beyond Bed Capacity
The hospital investment is not limited to additional wards.
The provincial government has also allocated ₱9 million for a dialysis center at Dupax District Hospital, expanding the range of medical services available to residents who require regular dialysis treatment.
At the same time, the Department of Health is supporting further improvements through its Health Facilities Enhancement Program (HFEP).
For 2026, the DOH has allocated ₱25 million for a new ancillary building, while another ₱30 million is expected in 2027 for the upgrading of the hospital’s emergency room building, according to the provincial government and PIA report.
These projects form part of a broader effort to upgrade healthcare infrastructure across Nueva Vizcaya.
In a separate May 2026 report, PIA said the provincial government had allocated an additional ₱65 million under its 2026 Supplemental Budget for medical, dental and laboratory supplies, drugs and medicines, as well as a hospital information system designed to improve patient care and services.
A Wider Push to Bring Healthcare Closer to Communities
Nueva Vizcaya’s hospital expansion is also taking place alongside efforts to strengthen healthcare outside major hospital facilities.
The provincial government manages several health facilities, including the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Hospital, Bagabag District Hospital, Diadi Emergency Hospital, Kasibu Municipal Hospital, Lt. Tidang Memorial Hospital and Dupax District Hospital.
The province has also been promoting mobile healthcare services through a Mobile Clinic and Health Bus, while its “Dara ti Umili” blood-donation initiative seeks to maintain an adequate blood supply for patients.
Meanwhile, PhilHealth’s Yaman ng Kalusugan (YAKAP) program has expanded primary-care benefits, including consultations, medicines, laboratory services and screening. Region 2 hospitals are also part of the wider rollout of the program and related healthcare benefits.
What Happens Next Could Matter Most
For residents of Dupax del Norte and nearby communities, the real impact of the project will not simply be measured by the size of the new building.
The bigger question is whether the additional beds, dialysis services, ancillary facilities and future emergency-room upgrades can translate into shorter waits, less congestion and more accessible treatment for patients who currently face limited healthcare options.
If all three phases of the Dupax District Hospital expansion are completed as planned, the hospital’s capacity could increase dramatically from its current 25 beds, potentially reshaping how patients in northern and surrounding parts of Nueva Vizcaya access public healthcare.
For a province where distance can be a major barrier to medical care, that could prove to be the most important development of all.
