Morgan Rogers Makes Instant Chelsea Impact — But His Debut Goal May Be Just the Beginning

Morgan Rogers has already given Chelsea fans a glimpse of what could be coming — and the big-money signing insists he is nowhere near his best yet.

The England forward marked his competitive Chelsea debut with a goal as the Blues opened the 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Signed from Aston Villa for a reported £117 million, a British-record transfer fee, Rogers needed just one competitive appearance to make his presence felt. But after finding the net, the 24-year-old admitted there is still another level he wants to reach.

“I still think there are more gears to go,” Rogers said after the match, explaining that he is still adapting to his new team and working to reach full sharpness.

That admission could be the most intriguing part of his Chelsea debut.

Rogers delivers when Chelsea need him

Chelsea made a dream start under new manager Xabi Alonso, with João Pedro putting the visitors ahead inside the opening minute.

Fulham responded through Josh King, but Chelsea regained control before halftime when new signing Maxence Lacroix produced an impressive attacking contribution and supplied Rogers, who calmly swept the ball home.

It was exactly the kind of moment Chelsea supporters will have hoped to see from their record British signing: movement, composure and a decisive finish when it mattered.

Cole Palmer then extended Chelsea’s advantage early in the second half, completing an impressive attacking sequence involving Rogers and João Pedro.

Fulham refused to disappear, however, with Gonzalo García pulling another goal back and putting Chelsea under serious pressure during the closing stages.

The Blues eventually held on for all three points.

Chelsea’s new attacking trio already turning heads

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the match was not simply Rogers’ goal, but the chemistry developing between Rogers, Palmer and João Pedro.

The trio were heavily involved in Chelsea’s attacking play, with each player finding the net.

Reuters noted that Rogers combined effectively with Palmer and João Pedro before being substituted with around 10 minutes remaining because he was feeling tired.

Alonso had already spoken before the season about the potential partnership between Rogers and Palmer, and the opening-day performance offered an early indication of why Chelsea are excited about the combination.

The Guardian likewise highlighted Chelsea’s attacking trio as one of the most encouraging aspects of Alonso’s first competitive match in charge, while also pointing out that the team’s defensive problems remain a concern.

But Chelsea still have problems to solve

For all the excitement surrounding Rogers and Chelsea’s attack, the 3-2 victory was far from perfect.

Fulham repeatedly exposed weaknesses in Chelsea’s defensive structure, while goalkeeper Robert Sánchez came under scrutiny after being involved in mistakes that helped keep the hosts in the contest.

The Guardian described Chelsea’s defending as an area that still requires significant improvement, suggesting Alonso’s side remains a work in progress despite the encouraging attacking display.

That could become an important storyline as the season develops.

Chelsea have shown they can score goals. The bigger question may be whether Alonso can make them more reliable at the other end.

Rogers isn’t satisfied yet

And that is where Rogers’ post-match comments become particularly interesting.

Despite scoring on his debut and helping Chelsea secure three points, the forward insisted he has more to give.

He acknowledged that he became tired late in the match and said he is determined to find those extra levels quickly as the fixtures begin to arrive in rapid succession.

For a player arriving under enormous expectations after a £117 million transfer, scoring immediately is the perfect start.

But Rogers’ message was clear: this may only be the beginning.

Chelsea’s next challenge comes quickly, with Luton Town visiting Stamford Bridge in the League Cup on Thursday.

And if Rogers can improve his fitness, chemistry and understanding of Alonso’s system while maintaining the attacking spark he showed against Fulham, Chelsea supporters may have plenty more to get excited about.
