Singapore can expect wetter weather in the second half of September, with more showers forecast across the island after a mostly dry start to the month.
The Meteorological Service Singapore said localised short-duration thundery showers are expected over parts of the island between the late morning and afternoon on most days during the second half of September.
Widespread moderate to heavy thundery showers could also occur on one or two days when regional winds converge over Singapore.
Overall rainfall for the second fortnight of September is expected to be near the long-term average across most parts of the island.
Despite the increase in showers, temperatures are expected to remain high. Daily maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 33 to 34 degrees Celsius on most days and could climb to around 35 degrees Celsius on a few days.
Nights are also expected to remain warm and humid, with minimum temperatures staying above 27 degrees Celsius on some nights.
The forecast follows a largely dry first half of September. Although brief thundery showers occurred in some areas, rainfall was well below average across the island.
On September 11, regional wind convergence brought moderate to heavy thundery showers to many parts of Singapore. The Scotts Road area recorded 105mm of rainfall that day, the highest total recorded during the first half of the month.
The increased rainfall could provide some relief from the heat and haze that affected Singapore earlier in September. However, the risk of transboundary haze remains as fires continue to burn in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan.
Authorities have advised residents to continue monitoring weather and haze updates, particularly when planning outdoor activities.
With the Southwest Monsoon still prevailing over Singapore and the surrounding region, weather conditions are expected to remain a mix of hot, humid periods and recurring thundery showers through the remainder of September.
