Hong Kong actor Mat Yeung’s new roast-meat restaurant in Petaling Jaya has hit an unexpected setback, just 10 days after officially opening its doors.
Six Hub Roast House, the TVB star’s Hong Kong-style roast-meat eatery in the SS2 area of Petaling Jaya, was ordered to temporarily stop operations by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) on Aug. 24. A closure notice was posted at the restaurant, requiring it to cease operations from 1pm that day.
The development quickly attracted attention online, particularly because the restaurant had only recently held its grand opening on Aug. 14.
Why was Mat Yeung’s restaurant closed?
According to reports from CNA, The Star, The Straits Times and Malay Mail, the closure was connected to alleged breaches involving the restaurant’s licence and use of its premises.
Six Hub Roast House later explained that part of its kitchen setup had occupied an area considered public space.
The restaurant said it was complying with the authorities’ instructions and would temporarily close while making the necessary adjustments.
Mat Yeung also addressed the situation in an interview with Sing Tao Headline, saying that some items had been placed in the back alley because there was a large amount of equipment following the restaurant’s opening. Authorities reportedly instructed the restaurant to move the items back to its warehouse.
Importantly, reports indicate that the closure was not linked to a food-hygiene issue. AsiaOne, citing local reports, said the restaurant’s representative explained that the problem involved the placement of kitchen equipment and the use of roadside/public space.
Restaurant plans to reopen on Aug. 26
Rather than announcing a permanent closure, Six Hub Roast House said it planned to shut for two days to complete the required adjustments.
The restaurant apologised to customers for the disruption and said it expected to resume normal operations on Wednesday, Aug. 26, following the rectification work.
That means the latest reports point to a temporary regulatory setback, rather than the end of Yeung’s new food-business venture.
The restaurant was already attracting attention
The timing is particularly notable because Six Hub Roast House had generated considerable attention since opening.
Yeung officially launched the restaurant on Aug. 14, serving Hong Kong-style favourites including char siu, crispy roast pork, roast duck and poached chicken. He has also been actively involved in the business, helping serve customers and oversee operations when his filming schedule allows.
Opening the restaurant was also more than just another celebrity business venture for the 45-year-old actor.
Yeung had previously described operating a traditional Hong Kong-style roast-meat business as a long-held dream. He had also joked about moving into the restaurant business after being asked whether he could no longer survive in TVB.
A new chapter after his Malaysia wedding
The restaurant launch came shortly after another major milestone in Yeung’s personal life.
The actor married Malaysian model-actress Lisa Ch’ng in Kuala Lumpur on Aug. 2, following their long-term relationship. His new restaurant in Petaling Jaya has therefore become part of a significant new chapter of his life in Malaysia.
For now, the restaurant’s future appears to remain intact.
If the planned rectification is completed as announced, Six Hub Roast House is expected to welcome customers again on Aug. 26.
But after a highly publicised opening and an unexpected shutdown just 10 days later, all eyes will now be on whether the celebrity-backed eatery can make a smooth comeback.
