Hong Kong actor Mat Yeung and Malaysian actress Lisa Ch’ng are mourning the death of Lisa’s mother, Datin Kong Yuk Chu, who passed away at the age of 82.
The family announced the heartbreaking news on social media on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026. Lisa’s sister, actress Jacquelin Ch’ng, also shared an obituary and tribute, saying their mother passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends.
The announcement came only weeks after Kong attended Lisa and Mat Yeung’s wedding celebration in Kuala Lumpur.
In her emotional tribute, Lisa shared a wedding photograph featuring herself, Mat and her mother. She expressed how deeply she missed Kong and hoped that her mother was now free from pain and reunited with Lisa’s late father.
Mat Yeung also shared the family’s obituary on social media and asked the public and media to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.
“Please give me and my family some space and time, and please respect our mother.”
The actor said the family was not in a position to respond to enquiries at the moment.
Her daughter’s wedding became one of her final public appearances
The timing of Kong’s death has made the loss particularly poignant.
On Aug. 2, Lisa Ch’ng and Mat Yeung held their wedding reception at the JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur, following nearly a decade together. Kong was present at the celebration, with photographs showing her seated in a wheelchair among family members.
CNA reported that the couple had been together for about a decade and that the wedding brought together relatives, friends and fellow entertainers from Hong Kong and Malaysia.
Lisa had previously explained that Malaysia was an important location for the celebration because of her family ties and her late father.
Kong Yuk Chu was a former actress
Datin Kong Yuk Chu was not only known as the mother of Jacquelin and Lisa Ch’ng. She was also a former actress associated with Hong Kong television before her later life in Malaysia.
She was married to Malaysian businessman Datuk Bill Ch’ng Chong Poh, who died in 2023 at the age of 83 after an illness, according to The Star.
The family has now asked for privacy as they prepare to say their final goodbye.
Funeral arrangements announced
According to reports citing the family obituary, the wake will be held at Nirvana Memorial Centre Kuala Lumpur from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, with the funeral service scheduled for Sept. 1.
She is expected to be laid to rest at Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih.
The passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences for Lisa, Jacquelin, Mat Yeung and the rest of the family.
For Lisa and Mat, the tragedy comes at an especially emotional moment: only weeks after celebrating their marriage surrounded by loved ones, they are now preparing to farewell a beloved member of their family.
