BACOLOD CITY — A major change is coming to one of the biggest highlights of MassKara Festival 2026, with organizers moving the much-anticipated Arena Dance Competition away from the Paglaum Sports Complex after a safety assessment found the venue unsuitable for the event.
MassKara Festival Director Rodney Ascalon confirmed that Paglaum Sports Complex will no longer host the 2026 arena competition following an assessment of the facility.
The decision is being made with public safety and crowd management in mind, organizers said.
The new venue has not yet been publicly identified. According to reports, organizers are expected to announce it during the official launch of MassKara Festival 2026 in the first week of September.
Why was Paglaum Sports Complex dropped?
According to Bombo Radyo Bacolod, Ascalon said the assessment determined that the Paglaum Sports Complex was no longer safe for staging an arena competition of this scale.
The decision is significant because Paglaum has previously served as an important venue for MassKara’s arena events.
In 2025, the arena competition was held at the Paglaum Sports Complex before the street-dance component proceeded toward the Bacolod Public Plaza. The Philippine News Agency also reported that organizers had prepared evacuation procedures and extensive security measures for the festival’s major events that year.
This year’s organizers, however, appear determined to address venue and crowd-safety concerns before the festival’s major competitions begin.
Why not move the competition to Bacolod Public Plaza?
The Bacolod Public Plaza might seem like the obvious replacement, but organizers have ruled it out as an alternative venue for the arena competition.
Bombo Radyo reported that the plaza has limited space and seating capacity for the large audience expected at an arena competition.
There is another concern: the public plaza has recently undergone renovation, and organizers do not want a large-scale event to potentially damage the newly improved facility.
That means the organizers now have to find a venue that can accommodate dancers, spectators and production requirements without compromising safety.
The street-dancing competition is also changing
The venue change is not the only adjustment planned for MassKara 2026.
According to Digicast Negros, the street-dancing competition will have a new route, while the grand awarding ceremony will remain at the Bacolod Public Plaza.
The street-dancing competition is expected to continue along Araneta Street, according to Bombo Radyo’s report.
These changes form part of a broader effort by organizers and the city government to improve crowd management and the overall festival experience.
What is planned for MassKara 2026?
Mayor Greg Gasataya and the Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc. (BGFI) formally sealed their partnership for this year’s festival through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on August 19, 2026.
Festival organizers said the 2026 edition will continue its grassroots approach, with communities and barangays playing a major role in the celebration.
The festival will carry the theme:
“Share the Smile, Celebrate Gugma.”
The 2026 competition lineup includes 10 Electric MassKara entries, eight barangay entries and seven school-category entries for the arena and street-dancing competitions, according to Digicast Negros.
The festival will also be staged in phases, with food kiosks opening as early as October 1 and a Pre-MassKara Celebration running from October 1 to 8.
The major festival highlights are scheduled for October 16 to 18, 2026.
Safety has become a major MassKara priority
The decision to change the arena venue comes after years in which organizers have placed strong emphasis on managing the enormous crowds attracted by MassKara.
During the 2025 festival, authorities prepared evacuation points and emergency routes for major festival areas, while thousands of police and other security personnel were deployed for the celebration.
In 2023, organizers also limited attendance at the arena venue to about 4,500 ticketed spectators because of security and safety considerations, illustrating just how challenging crowd management can be during MassKara’s biggest events.
This year’s venue change therefore signals that organizers are prioritizing the safety and capacity of the site before announcing where thousands of festivalgoers will gather.
The big question: Where will the dancers compete?
For now, that remains the missing piece.
Organizers are searching for a replacement venue, but no new location has been officially announced yet.
That announcement is expected during the first-week-of-September launch of MassKara Festival 2026, when the organizers are also expected to unveil more details about this year’s competitions and activities.
For MassKara fans, the change means one thing: the festival is still on, but one of its biggest stages is about to move.
And when organizers finally reveal the new arena venue, the question will be whether it can handle the massive crowds, production demands and energy that make the MassKara Arena Competition one of Bacolod’s biggest annual spectacles.
