A 14-year-old boy caused two traffic accidents after driving a car through the streets of Penang, prompting a police investigation into reckless and dangerous driving.
The incidents happened at about 4.50pm on Tuesday in Taman Chai Leng, Perai, according to Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah.
Police said the teenager was driving from Lorong Kurau 23 towards Jalan Kurau 1 when he first collided with a car parked along the roadside.
Instead of stopping, the teenager allegedly continued driving and entered the wrong side of a one-way road at Lebuh Kurau 5. He then collided with another car travelling in the correct direction.
The two crashes involved three vehicles in total. All three cars were damaged, but no injuries were reported.
Videos of the incident later circulated on social media, showing the teenager behind the wheel and members of the public gathering around the vehicle after the crashes.
In one video, the teenager appeared distressed while sitting in the driver’s seat as people confronted him at the scene.
Police said the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the teenager or the circumstances that led him to drive the vehicle.
Nik Aminuddin urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities and ensure that underage children do not drive vehicles.
He also advised members of the public not to speculate about the incident while the investigation is ongoing.
The case has drawn attention to the dangers of allowing minors to operate vehicles before they are legally permitted to drive, particularly in residential areas where traffic and pedestrians may be present.
